I have to disagree, the reason the Big 3 are in the trouble they are in is waste. Wasteful management of resources, (including labor) and wasteful products. Some 30+ years ago there was a wake up call in America to produce more efficient vehicles, after the crisis, the big 3 largely went to sleep again, lulled by cheap oil. Meanwhile our asian competitors have been refining their vehicles and their methods of producing them to maximize profit and minimize waste. I believe they call the process kaizen.
So yes, the "whole model" is screwed up. Should we lessen ourselves, no, but I believe the senator is pointing out that on a global scale, we need to be more competitive.
