When I was a kid, I met a guy who carried a pocket Bible with him all the time. He showed me the shrapnel embedded in the thing - can't remember what he said happened, I just remember the metal chunks and him saying he was glad it was in his left chest pocket when he went into combat.
On the one hand, it seems like a strange thing to carry into battle in such a prime location (think Keenan Wynn in Dr. Strangelove: "You don't think I'd go into combat with loose change in my pocket, do you?"), but I can't argue with the results.Don't just say no to kickback.Comment

I had an NCO that was abnormally short. He was barely 5 feet tall. During one of our patrols he had an IED detonate about 4 feet in front of him. Because of his small stature he only suffered ringing in the ears and a crease in the top of his kevlar where a piece of frag skimmed across. Had it been anyone of normal size it would have hit them in the neck or face. Not many people face a south african 155 from 4 feet away and walk away.Comment
