Plus 1 for Chapter 11. At least then there will be oversight and accountability. Just throwing money at them seems to be a ridiculous solution.

npregion, I appreciate the point you made but these are corporations. They answer to shareholders. They are under no obligation (even the American ones) to do anything for charity. Most of them do but they don't have to. Charitable donations earn goodwill. Believe it or not it is an asset listed on a companie'es balance sheet. They have my goodwill also, but not enough of it to pursuade me to buy one of their automobiles right now.

I wonder if there are any stats on how much American corporations have contributed (directly or indirectly) to civil disasters in other countries?

On this very point - I would like to add that one of the big three US auto makers has a direct presence and factory in Japan under its own name. Would it have been judged harshly by US citizens if the US automaker did not donate charity to the Kobe region in '95 when 6000 were killed in the earthquake? Should Japanese have judged their purchase based on the company's donations or non-donations, especially in light of it being a foreign company in Japan?

I agree that giving is a part of PR and to me - that alone has enough merit when all things are equal in a product comparison to influence my purchase.

The key part is 'all things being equal'. In my view, they aren't, at least not right now.
