    Reading "The Things They Carried"

By Tim O'Brian. It's the first book I've read about soldiers in Vietnam and afterwards. I can't even fathom what you've gone through.
It is very well written in a style that makes you feel as though you are sitting with Tim and he is telling you a story.

In honor of the Veteran's Day coming soon, from one Vet to another, thank you for your service.

The Things They Carried... how bout purification pills to drop in your canteen full of stagnant water from a bomb crater and of course pre-mixed Kool-Aid to hide the taste of stagnant water from a bomb crater? ha.. ha... ha..ha..ha..

    Have a good day...

They are in there, along with salt tabs and P-38 can openers.

Does the book explain how to fish with a grenade, or the trick of boiling water with a piece of det cord.

        Now, that's really humping it.

Det cord... didn't they trust you guys with C-4 plastic explosives? Just a pinch which burns blue hot and the water is boiling in a jiffy.

Beans & franks smothered and covered in Tabasco sauce.. canned crackers.. peanut butter.. a packet of coffee from your 1951 surplus Korean War C rations. Why in the world would anyone bother to fish? Leave that for the S. Vietnamese soldiers.... who did have it down to a science.

One guy chunks the grenade while another strips off his clothes and jumps in just after the concussion from the blast. He beats the Olympic record for getting to the un-concious fish that floated to the surface and grabs it. Then back to the bank where the rest of the boys already had a fire blazing ready to cook. About the only thing they were efficient at as I see it.. as fighting was not really their forte. ha.. ha... ha..ha..ha..

I must have read that somewhere in one of those fiction novels.

Have a good evening Brother Bruce...

            No water boiling techniques

It starts out very detailed with the physical things carried, ammo, weapons, c-rations, photos but it's actually more about the things carried in the mind, the darker stuff you'd like to forget.
