    Question about shiftwork

Here's a question that came up while on a drive we took this weekend. I'm sure someone here knows the answer...

How do companies handle the third/night shift when the time adjusts for daylight savings? When you set the clock back, do night shift workers work an extra hour and then get overtime? Then do they lose an hour when you move the clock forward? Do the shift times themselves change?

I worked for Ford many years ago and the mid shift worked the extra hour. Same way in most cases when I was on active duty in the Navy.

And then in the spring, an hour less. At least that's the way the Bell System did it.

        all hours actually worked.

Pay is based on actual hours worked. Probably from the state's wage and hour laws. Can't credit it at one period of the year and then debit it later, some employees are new, some quit or got fired, some might be sick, etc. No big deal really.

Yup. You work the extra hour. Back when I was saving up to buy a house I pulled a lot of overtime. My favorite shifts were to work till 2-3 in the AM. I got paid a premium to work the extra 5 hours without really doing any real work.

Every shift job I have had (and/or heard about)...You worked your shift, and got paid the same as usual. Meaning, you worked an extra hour w/o pay in the fall, and got a free "hour off" in the spring.

            YMMV, of course!

I worked over 30 years in a steel mill. When time change rolled around, the "lucky shift" worked 9 hours, and got paid OT for 1 hour. The other shift that was affected worked 7 hours, and was paid for 7.

So I guess if you took a vacation day when the clock moved forward, you'd only use up 7 hours of vacation, then, right?
