    Can Someone Explain This?

I went to Lowes today to pick up a grate to fit our new kitchen sink bowl bottom, which I found out they don't stock. I looked for the display sink model to get the model number, and it was gone!

So, I asked a sales rep where the heck it was, and he said that particular model was discontinued and all those sinks were trashed. I remember we had a thread here about tools that got trashed that were floor models or discontinued, but sinks??

He said that the MFG requires the sinks to be removed from the store and crushed. Now with sinks that cost over $250 it seem illogical to trash them. The store could use them as a givaway for a type of other purchase, like cabinets, or even have a parking lot sale, or donate to charity, like Habitat For Humanity, just to redeem something, but to trash them? What could be the reasoning behind this?

    Warranty issues?

get a giveaway sink that is scratched, dented, chipped; contact the manufacturer and get a new one?

Loring's answer might hold true in this case.

Could be that they or the manufacturer subscribe to the thinking that every closeout or demo sink that is given away represents one lost sale on a new one. I don't agree, but some do...

Loring's post is probably the correct answer. My work laptop has a depreciation schedule. Once that schedule is used up, I get a new one. Old one is destroyed, even if it works. If it were donated, sold as used, etc then my company would have to pay taxes on that income they wrote off as part of the depreciation.

Well, it proves one thing for sure.
They aren't worth anywhere near $250
Why doesn't the word 'planing' show up in my computer spell check?

Being the skeptical type, I would assume it is in the house of the store manager or department manager, whoever saw it first :-)
