LOML was talking on the phone with our middle daughter in the US when our daughter suggested that Linda check out a certain web site in the US, which has a counter part site in Japan.

LOML responded: "Well that company puts biscuits in the computers and makes them transfer to the Japanese version of the web site - so I just stay away from them!"

Is LOYL English, perhaps. In England a biscuit is what is called a cookie in the US. I don't know if that is true with computers.

Hank, not to be stealing your thread...

But as Steve asked if your loyl is English; They have an odd saying, "Keep your pecker up", which when I first heard it from a friend's wife who is from London, I fell out the chair laughing. It means to keep your chin up more or less. Here's a url for that phrase:

I've heard her talk about biscuits when referring to cookies, as Steve mentioned about the English. So I too am wondering is loyl English?

Another phrase that usually gets a good laugh over here (US) is: "I'll knock you up at nine". Which means that I will call or get you at nine! Or this one especially geared to us woodworkers: "Thicker than two short planks" Which is used when talking about a particularly dense or stupid person! My years living over there gave me a wonderful education in alternate meanings of words.

The differences in English are funny at times. An Aussie shop keeper told a friend of mine (American) that she would give him a "tinkle" when the ordered product came in.

BTW, LOML is American. So the "Biscuit" quote wasn't a reference from a British perspective.

Ya know, years ago I had a deskside support job. One morning I was in our lab and a woman calls asking for Mike (my coworker who'd given her a new PC a few weeks ago). She was complaining about a cracked cupholder. He didn't know what she meant. I explained it, he didn't believe me. We bet lunch (he lost). He went to pick the PC up and came back laughing. The tray was indeed cracked, complete with coffee stains.

Never had a "cup holder" problem, but one of our users called the morning after I replaced her defective keyboard (hot chocolate spill). She couldn't log in and asked for her old keyboard back. I explained that her old kbd was dead and wouldn't do her any good. "Oh, yes it will... because it's got my password taped to the bottom!" Sigh.
