    Caught On Camera

Had the dogs outside, and wouldn't have seen this Iguana if he wasn't moving. Was the old fire drill of getting the dogs inside, getting the camera, and hoping to catch it with a picture. The one below is the third specie I've seen in the back yard. This one is about 18" long.

This one looks to be a different specie:

Probably all the same species, as the feral population of iguanas in South Florida are all "green" iguanas (iguana iguana), except for the occasional "escapee" of other species. However, green iguana colors can vary from bright green to very pale, with some brownish striping, and even reddish (adult males in mating season). These color variations come from diet, habitat, season, age, sexual maturity, and other factors. Iguanas do not do the "chameleon" thing of rapidly changing colors to blend with the background. There is an invasive breeding population now in SoFlo, but it is thought that a couple of colder-than-normal winters will reduce their further growth. In the meantime, take care of your garden and ornamental plants, as they're prime iguana chow...

Actually they do eat them in South America and they are supposedly considered a delicacy. I would imagine they taste more like chicken than a rattlesnake does. A little wild taste in snake, but with these being strict vegetarians, depending on what they ate, they might taste good or not so good.

I would think the alien python population down there would keep the iguana population in check. Maybe they are too busy focusing on alligators.

I think raptors would do a pretty good job on them too. Especially the smaller ones.

I've eaten much less desirable looking critters than them. If a furry creature isn't available, I guess they would do for a quick snack.

Lee, although not so much evidence in the wild, captive iguanas do eat insects and even mice...

Saw a program on the History Channel on Monster Quest and you people in Florida seem to have a growing problem with Boa Constrictors, now that is scary. You could start loosing pets and other small animals including kids. Those Dudes get BIG.

Not only Boa Constrictors, but Pythons, Diamondback Rattlers, Water Moccasins, Coral, Copperheads, and Cottonmouths. But the good news is I haven't seen one Anaconda...yet.

I have owned 3 of these. All over 1' up to 2' long. 2 escaped and may be the subject of this picture.
The third had complications when laying eggs and actually broke her back. She fell a short distance in her cage and could no longer move her tail or hind legs. She was put down.
I have seen them eat insects that just happen to be on the veggies and fruits, but nothing bigger.
However when captive, I guess you will eat what's given to you and like it perhaps.

In the wild though, there is usually plenty of veggies and plants that they can find. Plants don't move as quickly as insects or mice.

Actually they kind of taste like American Bald Eagle or Spotted Owl.

Actually, the most frightening thing is old people driving Cadillacs who suddenly notice there's an iguana in the front seat with them...
