    Proud Grandpa

LOML takes care of our 4 year old Grand daughter. Tori who has told me she is not 4 but 4 1/2 goes to a prekindergarten 4 days a week at a nearby church. Today she came home and showed Grandma and me what she learned. She then proceded to sing the Alphabet Song and "signed" the letters. We both were so proud and kinda got choked up. Don't think she did them all correctly but she is learning and this will be usefull at some point in her life. I will tell her teacher tomorrow how proud we are and thank them for what they are teaching. Perhaps the public schools could do this. Better stop here so it doesn't get political. He dad, our son, just stands and beams when she showed him what she can do. Mom just cried.

One thing I learned from a college sweetheart who got her degree in education is that parental support is really important. Not every kid is a natural learner and all kids have different abilities but generally speaking, parents who encourage and set high but reasonable expectations turn out better students than parents who don't.

Get her started on arithmetic. The world needs engineers and engineering requires lots of math

Good for you, Tom, and good for her... Kids can do amazing things if parents and teachers can work together to identify those areas where special interests or aptitudes dwell, and encourage their development in those areas. There is a place for fundamentals and structured learning, but IMHO far too little emphasis is placed on "elective" learning and vocational activity, particularly in the younger ages. Just too easy to "rubber stamp" an education.

There's nothing wrong with being a proud grandpa. It's amazing how something like seeing or listening to a child do their thing leads to such strong emotions. Been there, done that.

I'll have to agree with that. Who knows what would have changed in the lives of people if they didn't receive the rubber stamp treatment in education?

Another 'grandpa' (or, Pappap, in my case) show of support for showing your support. Heck, when the grandkids are leaving our house I always thank them for coming - got that from watching and listening to my father-in-law over the years ('Miss ya, Dad"!) and I know how it made me feel, even as an adult.
            Blessings,
