    Another computer question

My son wants me to put a new hard drive in his computer. I don't know much about computers, but I am able to put in a hard drive. Here's my question:

According to Dell, it takes an IDE hard drive. The user manual states that it has a bay for i inch high hard drive. Is the 1 inch high drive something special, or does it really matter if it is 1 inch high? Or maybe all IDE hard drives are 1" high?? Also if I bought an EIDE hard drive, when it calls for an IDE hard drive, is that a problem? I don't know the difference between them.

Almost all are 1" high. Some are shorter, but those are mostly enterprise level drives. EIDE and IDE are 99.99% interchangeable. A few very old controllers will not accept EIDE devices, but most machines that would have one have been mothballed. More than likely Dell just shortened it a letter for simplicity. No worries.

Just get a 3.5" wide drive. The smaller ones are for laptops.

Make sure you get the Master/Slave jumper settings correct.

I don't think I'll need help with it, but if I do, I'll know where to go. Thanks for the offer.
