Spent an hour waiting at the DMV today to renew my license. I finally get in to see somebody and she tells me I can't renew cause I have a suspended license up in NY. . I haven't driven in that state in 14 years and I was clean the last time I renewed.

I get home, call the DMV and find out they want 25 bucks for me not turning in the license tags after I moved here in '94. At the time I wasn't gonna drive 600 miles to turn in my tags. Cleared it up but now I have to go back next week and sit for another hour.

Think yourself lucky. I had Ohio suspend mine because of tickets in a state I never lived in. I went to renew, and ended up getting my learners permit, waiting a week and taking my test again, becuase the BMV couldn't seperate me from another John Majetic from Florida.

after my first tour with the Corps, I went to renew my DL. Military serving out of state are not required to renew and the llicense is considered valid until you return.Under the old numbering system, the number was reissued to someone else. No wonder tickets never showed up on my record!

New system changed that and I drove on the next license for 12 years after it expired!

And here I thought I had a problem with license plates. Lived in Illinois for one year and it took the whole year just to get IL plates. I finally got the IL plates the day before I moved back to MN. So I drove the whole year in MN with IL plates.

Having orange plates on a maroon car is a whole 'nuther story!

What a coincidence. I went throught the same thing in Ohio last December with the *******s from NY. After 11 years, they put my name on the national driver's registry for not returning two sets of NY plates when I left the state. This registry is supposed to be a posting for people who have lost their licenses because of serious offenses such as DUI, not this unheard of petty crap that NY is doing. I had to pay $55 in fines to have my name removed. Wish I knew where to resolve this utter abuse of authority. I will not live in the state again, if that is how they treat their residents.

Now I just don't get it. Alabama doesn't require that you turn in your plates. This is as it should be.
If you leave a state and move somewhere else, how are you supposed to get your car there if you have to turn in the plates already? That is just brilliant!

machine, that is not how they treat their residents, it is how they treat the folks who've moved away and have no one to complain to. I don't know what the law is up there regarding new cars and plate transfers - I only ever owned one car when I was up there. Here when you sell a car you either surrender the plates or transfer them to a new car. Some other states the plates stay with the car for life.

When the politicians move their limo driver takes them to the new house... no need for plates

Here in Michigan the plates are yours once purchased and are assigned to your vehicle. You may transfer them to another car at any time for a fee of $15. If you do not transfer them to another vehicle at the time you sell the vehicle they are attached to they are considered expired and may not be renewed or afterward transfered. In that case they are just considered scrap metal. You do not have to turn them in. The number on them is then returned to the available pool of license numbers. If your smart here in Michigan you will cut them up and trash them. I have a couple of sets from years gone by waiting till I get that big set of metal shears to cut them up.

I've got a couple plates in my shop too. I saw a guy the other day that makes very simple bird houses and use plates as the roof. Just bends them in the middle for the peak. The ones I saw were college plates and the house were painted to match. He made one with Earnhart's number three on it and used a spark plug for the little perch outside the hole. Nice little things for a quick project and gift ideas.
