When I was a poor E-5 in the Navy, I painted a '73 Volvo wagon and liked the results so much I painted a '68 with the leftover Royal Blue Rustoleum. The secret to a really good automotive finish is to buy the best brush you can afford.
They actually did look surprisingly good - you had to be a few feet away and really looking to tell they weren't sprayed. The paint was soft and would scratch fairly easily, but touch-ups were a piece of cake.
I probably wouldn't do it the same way now, but at the time, I painted both cars for something like $20 in paint plus a $20 brush and they both looked much, much better than they had before.
