    Cabinetmakers Are Not Geeks!

This is an update on my deceased BIL's computer that we inherited. We spent hours trying to get an internet connection. So we had our specialist come over last night to fiddle with it to see what the problem is.

I swear, if I had filmed him clicking away and re-playing it on slo-mo, I still couldn't keep up. Anyway he brought in his bag of geek tools and a box of a million feet of the blue ethernet wire and assembled plugs on both ends and connected the modem to the ethernet connection on the back of the tower. He said that would provide a faster transfer of files than a wireless one.

We also found out that a computer develops a headache if it's off the internet for a while. Two hours later and his downloading I guess what was some scan programs, and a defrag (that we let run all night), the darn thing works like a champ now.

I had both the tower and the monitor huddled in a plastic bag for a couple of weeks to get the odor out, and none was obvious. Last week I had a follow-up appointment with my cardiologist and asked him about the odor and he said that as it absorbed the odor, it will expell the odor in time. I tried the bag trick before asking him that thinking I could speed up the process.

As for accessing his email, we will have to make arrangements with AT&T to have the account accessible by providing some paperwork including the death certificate, if LOML decides she wants to do that. We have his user name, and applying for a lost password only brings up a recognition of our account.

Cabinetmakers Are Not Geeks but I bet the computer is sitting on a nice stand or desk.
    Thanks again,

Yeah. My best friend's son-in-law is a computer / network / software geek. Earns a good living at it.

MBF's computer had a problem we worked on for 2 days when I was up there for a visit. We gave up. SIL fixed it in an hour (so, OK, it really only took him 5 minutes).

There's all kinds of computer geeks. I know of only 25 or so people in my company in the United States who do what I do, and a dozen of them are on my team. Worldwide there are maybe 50. OTOH, I needed help to figure out why my FIL's computer wouldn't print properly.

One of my buddies is the CIO of a electronic games company (they make computer games). He is really a geeks, geek.

When I have struggled long enough with a computer problem, after buying him lunch, he fixes the problem in about 45 seconds.

It is a talent I admire, but don't want!

OK, Crokett, now I'm curious. I'm a programmer (mostly UNIX, Perl, and database stuff) and I try to be good at what I do, but I wouldn't consider myself a rarity. What do you do?
I really am going to make something one of these days.

The short answer is I fix Fibre Channel SANS.

The long answer is out of any one of the many devices connected to a SAN, I isolate the one that is misbehaving and help figure out root cause. There aren't many at my company that know as much about as many different things as my team. Certainly not at a protocol level. The only guys I know who know more do the actual protocol develoment/test and sit on the standards boards. Even then they are specialized in one or two.

I always had this image of you sitting in a dark room watching the matrix fly by... yeah, the red pill.
