    BBQ accessory for gas grill

I have a Charbroil gas grill. I want to be able to use wood chips in it so I can
smoke or BBQ meat in it but use gas. What I can use in my gas grill to do
    this?

    Thanks, Paul

They make cast iron boxes for wood chips you can set on top of the burners on one side, that will sort of give you a BBQ effect. If you want real, honest to goodness BBQ though you need to go to charcoal.

I have used an old cast iron skillet. It takes up a bit of room so now I will wrap the wood in heavy duty aluminum foil. I can shape it to the room avialable. Don't have to worry about holes, smoke finds a way out. A bonus is that being in an enclosed enviroment, the chips don't burst into flame.

Don't forget the liquid oxygen fire starting technic.
It'll get those wood chips toasty in a hurry.

Do you rest the box or foil contraptions on the cooking surface or do you
lift up the grate and put it closer to the burner?

I put it closer to the burner. I sort of clear out some of the lava rock (I keep a bucket stashed below my grill for this purpose) and set it on the grate. If you put wood chips in liquid, such water, beer, wine, whatever's handy), it will also create a moist environment in the grill, which I find pleasing.

The foil trick works also, just make sure it is HEAVY DUTY aluminum foil. Standard foil will disintegrate in the grill. Most poke holes in the pack. If you want to try Q in a gas grill you need to get a digital remote thermometer so you can get a grate level reading. If your grill has a hood thermometer, most are worse than useless. Mine reads 70-80F over what grate temps are.

The cast iron chip boxes are generally meant to be right on top of the burners. How many burners do you have? Hopefully 3-4+ arranged left to right and not front to back. Then you can just use the heat off one side or the other and keep your meat away from the radiant heat. Gas grills can be a real pain to keep under 250F though.

What are you wanting to Q?
