Dayton Airshow

Any Ohio folks going to the Dayton Airshow this year? http://daytonairshow.com/

LOML is the General Manager. If you watch or listen to the local news you will probably see or hear her. It is kind of a humbling experience to watch her running the show. In the course of mundane domestic issues, it is easy to forget that she manages a multi-million dollar budget and thousands of paid and volunteer workers, all while dealing with the Bureaucracy of 5 branches of the military, the FTA and Homeland Security.

I am heading down tomorrow morning and hoping for a great (and safe) show!

Grew up near Dayton, and my Dad even worked at Cox, I guess it is the Dayton International airport now, in the early seventies. but I have never gone to the airshow.

Wish her the best of weather and to keep up the good work.

Does she have more room to work, now that the airport "kicked" the trapshooters off the airport property?

It is very cool to see in person. There are other out of the ordinary things to see there too!

Sounds like your LOML had a little excitment at her party yesterday. Emergency landing of a big jet. Had some one the PA system describe what was going on. Very good congratulate her for job well done. Evidently a computer on one of the engines crashed and they had to land on one engine.

Thanks for the well-wishes. The show was safe and very entertaining. Saturday was very, very hot. Sunday, the crowd was a little thinner, because there was a chance of thunderstorms, but it turned out to be a perfect airshow day. High 80's, but with a steady breeze. High cloud cover that provided some shade but didn't interfere with any of the acts. And, just as the final act was finishing, it started to sprinkle.

I agree that the Air Force Museum is a must-see (and this is from Navy Submarines guy). By far the best free family entertainment I have ever been to.

What really struck me, when looking at the Apollo capsules, was that we went to the moon using vacuum tube technology! Amazing!

That was pretty interesting. Danny Clisham, one of the announcers is an airline pilot (actually, just about the entire civilian ground crew are commercial pilots). So, he was able to describe the entire procedure in detail. One of the industry guys I was talking to at the time paid a high compliment: "Danny and Rob (Reider) could narrate mowing the lawn and make it interesting."

Over the years, I have come to really appreciate just how good they are at filling dead air time. Sometimes, as an audience member, you think "Why on earth is he bothering to tell us that?" It is only when you realize that they were just told there would be a 10 minute delay that you start to appreciate their ability to "wing it" nearly indefinitely.

The emergency landing did result in the scrubbing of the Apache Helicopter demo, because they burned off too much fuel while waiting for the plane to come in, which was a shame. But, it was actually a pretty entertaining (I dare say that only after the plane landed safely) side show of its own.

I got the chance to talk to Joni LeRoy, whose husband Jim LeRoy was killed last year in Dayton's only fatality. He was by far my all-time favorite pilot.
She was there to give out a Scholarship in Jim's name. She is a truly amazing person. I don't even have words for it.
