My friends on the UCSD bike team had one of these events every year. San
Diego has a surprising amount of local donut shops and you have to go down
and up a canyon to get from one to another. I think they planned 10 stops
for the race and there were points awarded at each stop and points awarded
for uphill sprints, etc. I think it was a 40 mile course. These were real
donuts--not the light as air Krispy Creams.

The ones who had already puked their donuts up (and thus disqualified)
would try to make the other contenders suffer by pushing the pace to the
point where someone else would "break".

The winner of the last race managed 28 donuts! That's even hard to do
    without the biking aspect.

Too funny! Coincidentally, I have just returned from my morning ride. I went to the Starbucks on the opposite end of town for a coffee and an apple fritter.

Back when my two son's raced bikes and we traveled to races all over Northern California. They would eat the proper foods and this other father and I would have the coffee and donuts. Road races would take a while to get to the feed zones.

Back when I first started watching THE Tour, the announcers were trying to give us back in the US an idea of how much food each day the riders were consuming. They said the calories were equivalent to 38 jelly donuts a day!

You should have seen the food bill when my boys were racing. Pasta Pasta Pasta fruit, veggies and steak and eggs. On triaining rides I would have to go ahead with food and water.
