Rant about junk mail.

This morning I received two emails, in the junk folder, and I always look to see if maybe a good email may have slipped into the junk. One of the emails titled that Obama had dropped out of the race, and the other that Will Smith was found dead in the bathtub. Naturally both got my curiosity. Clicked on the one about Obama and it turned out to be a full blown porn site. Checked the one about Will Smith, and yep, another porn site. What some body else likes, watch is their business. Not mine. But to send email like this should be regulated some how. And please don't ask me how, because I'm not into law. So maybe there ain't anyway to protect families, but still.....

Makes you wonder who is in cahoots with who. When I got my first freebee email, I would get about a half dozen of those a day. I reported them and no luck. Seems like the senders email is coded somehow.

My first rule, is don't open them.

My next rule, is, if curiousity is getting to you, make sure your email is webbased (not downloaded), and use a bootable Linux distro (I do have to use other peoples pc's elsewhere), so it doesn't leave any permanent cookies, that cause anything else to show up/track.

Third rule, set up a email account, as a blow away account for anything that could even be REMOTELY questionable.

Most of the spam I get is from overseas. Lots of stuff from Amsterdam, Korea, etc.

I have pretty good filters. But I suggested to my hosting company a couple of weeks ago that it would be nice to turn-off all overseas E-mail that isn't whitelisted.

I have suggested other spam filter addons in the past, which they have implemented. And it kinda sounded like they liked my latest idea, so I can only hope.

It only matters because I'd be able to relax some of my other rules, so fewer false positives for U.S.-based E-Mail.

It would also be nice if IP addresses weren't so hap-hazardly assigned to countries. A small block here, a small block there. What a PITA. If the U.S., for example, had fewer ranges (I think there are currently well over 7,500 ranges), then this could more easily be done with existing header rules.

When I used outlook express as my primary email account, I would get spam. I now use Netscape email (have dial up), much less spam. There are spam filters on most email accounts. Gee, most of my spam was about male enhancements. How did they know???

I don't open stuff like that. But if I did, and it got me to a porn site, I'd be very afraid my computer became infected.

A friend's wife sent me a vid clip of a baby laughing hysterically when he was tossed a funny looking ball made of protruding, 1/8" dia x 1" long fingers. What a hoot! Who doesn't love laughing babies so I type in the site at the bottom of the vid. The address line suddenly changed and I got porned!! My eyes melted from my head. As I tried to close the window there was one pop-up after another when I 'x' ed the window. I don't know how they got past the pop-up filter but they did. I had to kill the connection to get myself free. I immediately performed scans for everything imaginable and it was clean. I have learned that these sleazballs will do anything treacherous in order to find the person whose mind is subject to instantaneous gratification via neurotransmitters and to get them hooked. Does the viewer have a choice? Yes. But, for the uninitiated they don't realize that it's happening and they do become hooked on the brain chems that are released by watching porn. Those who don't have this response just can't fathom this actually happening. I've done a lot of research on this for a church support group and it's pretty scary. Not to be taken lightly, as TV would have you believe by constantly joking about it. Sorry 'bout that. It just sets me off.

Yeah, this e-mail junk is a problem. My Apple "learns" what is junk mail and then drops down a tag that says; Safari thinks this is junk. Then its not put into black print on the screen, it's in sort of a light brown print. One nice feature is that I can
Trash" everything, then open it in trash if I'm curious and it is not sent back that my IP opened it. Speaking of money, I got a begging letter from Yusafa Arafat's wife, he had billions in over 315 accounts and would I please help her get it out of the banks hands!!?? I gets lots of these kind, some real comical! Oh well, problem is some where some poor sucker believes what they read!

Ironhat, you've said a lot there. On those

sites I mentioned, they had some type of popup that said I had adult something or other traces or some such. It is scary that those people go out of their way to trick you to their porn sites. I didn't stay on long enough to see where the url or other info lead to. I do wish there were penalties that could be handed out and enforced. Just be carefull. Oh, btw...the email header said "Will Smith found dead in bathtub", and the other that Obama dropped out of the race. THAT's why I looked. Next time I will check the net news corps.....
