A mold problem? If they had mold they could at least use it for brains!! OTOH, around these parts when you see extensive combinations of downspouts leading to the front porch it's due to the use of a cistern. Moving here 25 years ago was my first experience with this method of saving water. Back to the brainless ones... they could pipe in the exhaust from the clothes dryer and invite folks over for a sauna and a soak combined!
Blessings,
Chiz

The house I grew up in had a large cistern in the basement, and it was filled by rainwater in a very similar fashion. It was not used by the time my parents moved in, but the space was still there.
My parents' first house had a working cistern. My aunt and uncle lived in it until recently, and they still used it. It was odd to see a 5' wall in the basement filled to the brim with water behind it. As far as I know, it's still that way today.JoeComment

You haven't lived until you've been around a cistern that went septic. They build them into a lot of buildings down in the islands, because fresh water is very scarce there. I've seen entire resorts evacuated when the funk checks in...

Why yes I do see a problem. They narrowed the pipe at the bottom thereby restricting the water flow.Comment

Of course there is a problem
! That copper pipe is uninsulated and is sure to freeze and burst in the first cold snap...

I grew up on a farm that had a large cistern that all the gutters drained into. It was about 15x15x6. We had a separate tap in the kitchen for that which was used for washing dishes, and other non-potable uses, it also fed the outside taps we used for hosing down stuff. I used to like going into the basement during storms and watching the waterfall into the cistern.
We also had an overflow cistern that was about 20x15x8, I don't recall ever seeing that with even any water in it but heard stories of how it used to fill up sometimes.--
