What do you do with your magazines?

I have a very hard time throwing away WWing magazines (and many other types of magazines). 1 1/2 years ago I did a major purge and sold a bunch to unsuspecting folks here at BTCentral. I have now limited my paper subscriptions to Shopnotes and Wood. I store them and am in the midst of organizing them in binders.

Just about bought all the Pop Wood cds.

I tried using a 5X7 index card system, I was keeping up with it, I just ran out of room to easily keep the magazines (which led to the previously mentioned purge). I kept all my cards as a reference - because of how I catagorized items, by type of item, article, etc there are different magazines listed on each card.
the library at the college where I work has a rack for folks to trade magazines. Works really well, I take in some car mags and borrow some home dec mags for LOML.

Lance, as I'm starting the Portfolio categorization process now, and it'll automatically put folder names as categories, I wonder if you'd be willing to share your structure via PM with me. Might save me some time in getting the organization I want.

On a related note:

I signed up for FWW's online annual subscription, which gives me access to their entire back catalog of articles as well as a ton of videos. Very, very helpful.

I decided to try scanning my mags. After putting in several hours scanning, I decided it wasn't worth it because the quality was lacking, and to get better quality, it would take probably 4 times as much more time. I only got 4 or 5 mags scanned, so they go back into the yearly boxes because I have a hard time throwing them/giving them away.

Depends on the magazines. Sports Illustrated gets tossed. My woodworking ones I save the ones that have interesting articles since a lot of the articles rehash stuff I already know.

Right now they are in piles but I have started scanning them into PDF's which I index and when it gets big enough will burn to CD. It is rather time consuming as I have to review each article to see if it is a keeper, but it just has to be done. The question is, will I then dispose of the magazines I scanned?

Taking Care of Old Magazines.

I use a data base (or a spreadsheet) to keep track of the articles I want to remember. I store the magazines in plastic boxes. The articles I really want to reference, I scan them into the computer as JPG files. I then Use Acrobats "Create Adobe® PDF Online" to convert the JPG files into 'SEARCHABLE' PDF files.

Google's "Desktop Search will quickly locate the article you remember having but cannot locate.

I keep them, but I like the file drawer idea in the most recent wood magazine. That works will with the ones that have the info on the side.
