    Bikers invade La Crosse...

As many as 100,000 cycle enthusiasts will be in La Crosse this weekend to celebrate S&S Cycles' 50th anniversary. They are a premier motorycle engine and equipment manufacturer who sell to the top cycle customizers in the world.

The local townsfolk are not scared of the biker guys and gals, in fact they're rubbing their hands gleefully with dollar signs in their eyes. Some of us will be hanging out just for a glimpse of Sandra Bullock, who is married to Jesse James, or those OCC guys.

I will be at the Oktoberfest grounds selling beer tickets for a few hours for charity for my local high school show choir. As my neighbor said, only in La Crosse would a guy sell beer to a bunch of bikers to make money so his kids could sing show tunes all over the midwest...

The sad thing is they just had a fit about selling alcohol related items to raise money for a school. If it makes the school some money, who cares.

Reminds me of an amusing story.

A couple I know was in Milwaukee for a wedding. He's from Mich., she was born and raised in Hollywood.

They take charge of a ~13-year-old niece for a day, to see the sights in Milwaukee, and soak up some of the famous Midwest values. They come accross a big fair being held by the lake - big tents, midway, etc. So they queue up to get in, as they start to notice that people are dressed a little differently than normal. When they get to the gate they realize they are going into the Gay Pride Fair, with about 10,000 other people.

I sold beer tickets for 3 hours and got to listen to Dave Rogers' band play classic rock hits from the 60's and 70's--Dave is the owner of Daves' Guitar Shop, one of the best-known guitar places in the country, and a darn good player as well.

I met a lot of bikers, saw a lot of tattoos and leather. And I have to say, I've rarely met such nice people. They were a lot of fun to be around. And man, can they put the beer away. I bet I sold $10,000 worth of tickets (at $2.50 per beer) in 3 hours.

And those bikes are something else. Thousands of them, some of them worth more than my house. They are true works of art.

Up this way in the town of Port Dover, the town is swamped with motorcycles every Friday 13th. Certainly makes for a great day for the town. They even get out there when the 13th is a winter month.

Edit: I forgot to mention that they broke a Guinnis record this year.

Ah yes, bikers. I used to wonder until I started meeting professional folks who also ride.

Then we ran across a group of bikers last fall while seeing the sights in France. Not something Jesse James would make:
