    Wood Gloat

Someone locally is moving from the Bay Area to Alabama. This is the CL ad:

20 Cherry hardwood planks, rough cut (i.e. needs planing)
    4 to 16 feet long
    most are 8-12 inches wide
    1 to 2½ inches thick
many boards have checks and splits, but there are many good board-feet
    $100 for the whole lot
I saw the ad about 12 hours after it was posted and learned that someone else was interested. Left contact details. Got a note back last night that the other party was a no-show.

When I got there two hours ago, the pile of long boards was 12 feet long, 3 1/2 feet wide and about 10 inches high. There were also some shorter board between 2 and 4 feet in length and about 1 1/2 to inches thick that I took home. It works out to somewhere around 350 board feet if my math is right. Some of the boards do indeed have bad checks in them, but for 33 cents a board foot, I still come out way ahead. The wood is probably worth close to $2k at retail out here! Looks like mostly walnut with some cherry.

Of course, now the pressure is on to make something nice enough to display for this august group.

    You Suck!

Congratulations on a great deal. I monitr CL pretty closely, but haven't seen anything close to that kind of deal. I really covet some walnut right now, too.

    Have fun.

I'm pretty sure you could sell enough of that to fund the next tool purchase and still have enough left over for a good size project.

Just wait. I pick up the large pieces Saturday and then I'll take a photo of the lumber stack.

Patience and a lot of browsing. I've picked up walnut, ash and oak flooring all pretty reasonably by browsing the ads periodically and pouncing when a good deal comes along.

Look under materials. Then search for lumber or whatever species you're interested in.

                          Got plans for it all

                          Dear Jack,
I used to live in Los Altos but a year ago moved to So. San Jose...
                          But I'm still a neighbor..

I hope you don't mind me asking, but if you don't want to store all that nice cherry I sure could use a piece or two..

Also I have a planer if you'd like to take some advantage of me.

I understand if you have plans for it though.

Here's a photo of the shorts, which is 30 bf by itself and worth more than what I paid for the lot.

Here's the pile of long board, mostly 12 feet:

On closer inspection, there's a fair bit of unusable wood. Some will probably have to be tossed in the burn pile, which is a shame, but there are also some really good boards in this stack and I'm quite happy with my bargain.

The seller had used cherry to build a floating stairway in his home that looked really nice. I thought there might be enough to do the stair treads on the inside of the retirement home we're building but I'd need 256 bf of good wood for the treads and at least that much again for the landings.

It turns out, though, that my deal wasn't so great after all. This one was even better because it was all FREE! I need the alder, too.

I inherited a supply of hardwood (Solid Oak, Mahogany, Alder, and more) from my father who built furniture. The pieces range in size from 6
foot long by 1.5" thick by 15" wide to very small blocks. The total
quantity of the wood pretty much fills the bed of my pickup truck. If
anybody wants these, or knows of a high school woodshop or senior
center woodshop that could use them please let me know. I can deliver
