    75 years ago tonight

The Camden Drive-In located in Camden, NJ was the first drive-in theater in the U.S. In 1933 Richard Hollingshead received the first patent for the Drive-In Theater (United States Patent# 1,909,537). It was issued on May 16, 1933.

With an investment of $30,000, Richard opened the first drive-in on Tuesday June 6, 1933 in Camden, New Jersey. The price of admission was 25 cents for the car and 25 cents per person.

It's gone now, along with most of its relatives. Only about 500 left, but some new ones are being built. (There may be hope for Western civilization after all.)

It was a sad time when they began to close all the drive-ins. They sure bring back memories.

And if the truth be known, more than one person on this board was probably conceived in one. :P

Can you imagine the contoversy surrounding a new one?

          1. You'd need to assess the carbon footprint of all those cars.
          2. A noise abatement permit would be required. Convertible tops might have to be raised if THX is in use.
          3. Are teenagers hidden under a blanket in the trunk subject to citation for failing to use a safety belt?
          4. Should condoms be handed out at the ticket window? Advice on abstention?
edit: 5. Oh, and how about smoking? What if you need to smoke due to the discomfort of glaucoma?

We have one drive in left here in the Parkersburg area. Mom used to take tickets at one and the family got in free. When I started driving I had a 60 Falcon stationwagon. Mom didn't work there then.
Sometimes the old man passed out and left the am radio on so I got to hear the oldie songs and current event kind of things
