Basic personal safety: Never, never, NEVER give out personal info over the phone.

Unfortunately, people keep falling for the fast talkers and their oh-so reasonable sounding lines.

The whole thing (thief over the internet) really burns me. At least with a pickpocket you can break a finger or two.
