    Would You Do This?

In the 5/19 issue of Autoweek, there was an article featuring Richard Griot, and Griot's Garage automotive tools. The story showed his home shop/garage and him sitting on a pulled out tool drawer. It doesn't look like it's at full extension. I've got one of the "red" ones like that, from a national store that we've all heard of, and I doubt it could take the weight and still work properly.

I wouldn't do it, especially if, as in the picture, there were two perfectly good shop stools within arm's reach...

I think that garage is almost as nice as my kitchen. No way he fixes cars there.

On another board (used to visit frequently) a couple of the guys pictured themselves in the top drawer of their Snap~on chests. On the models they were showing (as well as the Lista ones, that I believe are in the picture), there are slides underneath as well as the sides. You have to look at the drawers total weight (and remember they don't leave the tools in them for the picture).

One of the mechanics at the garage, bought one, at full retail price (never listens to anyone). He ended up leaving and Snap is still looking for him (last I knew). The others prefer repo's, exchanges, cheaper Craftsman, or homemade chests. Spend the money on the tools, NOT the box One former mechanic/garage owner, in my sister in laws family, worked for 30 years, before buying the box (then did it as a tax write off)
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

Considering that those 2 cabinets under that counter top probably cost more than 1/2 of everything in my shop, I would have no qualms sitting on a drawer like that. These aren't your normal run of the mill homeowner series toolboxes.

A premium toolbox, like snap-on, mac, lista, vidmar, etc will do that no problem. That box he is sitting in probably costs around $1000. I was admiring a diesel mechanic's roll around at his shop once, he opened the bottom drawer and proceeded to jump up and down in it.

After a quick look at MSC direct's vidmar offerings just for an idea of price, this is the closest configuration they had to offer:

              Preconfigured Modular Storage Cabinets
              Number of Drawers: 7
              Height: 33
              Width: 30
              Depth: 27-3/4
              Material: Steel

              $1596.06/each ....

and I'm thinking the ones in the pic were a LOT higher than that yet

I'm guessing you are right about that! Top of the line tool boxes can hold an enormous amount of weight.

I'd not have done it but I might use the third drawer as a step to change a light bulb.
