    Cutting Off Your Nose.....

A guy has to cut a tree in half to satisfy a neighbor. Do you think the neighbor knows he was generally being a jerk and unreasonable? Or did he gamble on the guy cutting the tree down entirely?

Can't see the video, wish I could (Flash hasn't been upgraded for a 64 bit Linux for SOME TIME).

The next door neighbor, that I get along with, has four tree's, intermixed in pairs of two. Each with an elm and a tree of heaven (weed "tree" (loosely). I am paying for the mistake my grandmother made (she liked them), because she had no idea what they were (thought they would be good shade tree's). Now, the neighbor (wasn't here back then), doesn't want them down, and they grow diaginally, over my property (when limbs fall, they fall my way). Without getting lawyers involved, I can't do much to them (trim much and they die, then I would have to replace).
    Sucks.
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

I have been fortunate to have never had a mean and vindictive neighbor such as the one who called the attorney on the owner of the tree. I've heard a lot of stories of nose cutting over the years and it just boggles the mind how they feel that it's worth what they end up with. A good neighbor is invaluable and being one pays dividend worth more than money. Geez, I didn't mean to sound like Aesop!

I just went to some great pains to kill a Tree of Heaven on my property at the cabin. The forester said that if you shock the tree too severely they will launch hundreds of shoots from the roots. He instructed me on slashing the bark and pouring undiluted brush-killer into the slashes in the fall and then, the early spring. As of Memorial Day it's beginning to die and will provide habitat for woodpeckers. Not that any of this does you any good. Just an FYI from this end. Oh yea, I asked the forester if the wood was useful since this tree is about 10" in diameter. He said that it is soft, pithy and has a foul smell. I couldn't tell any of that from the slashes.

        That is awesome!

Stupid dispute. Some people and their lawns. We have one close to where I live. Spends all his time and dumps a ton of chemicals on his lawn. Gets upset when I walk the dog and the dog walks on his lawn.

Here, property laws and homeowner rights allow a homeowner to cut off what hangs over the property line. To destroy the beauty of a tree like that is unfortunate. I have a similar situation of a neighbors palm trees that hang over and on my fence. He also has a huge Avocado tree that branches over my property. We both discussed the situation and worked out a happy medium that suited both of us.

look at tree of heaven on Wickpedia

in some countries, "Tree of Heaven" is classified as a Weed. it has some usable wood in China, but the wood has little use in the US. Like the Forrester said, it is very difficult to kill out due to the suckers.

My guess is the neighbor doesn't think he's being unreasonable, but, was figuring the tree would just get cut down. I feel sorry for the guy who had to cut the tree. Sometimes people don't want to listen to reason.

I think you got it right - Hes a Jerk! I dont see what harm the tree did and it certainly must have looked better than staring at his neigbours cars or in this case the dead half of a tree.

It was interesting that he avoided being interviewed.

Yep. I think he knew he was being a jerk and was gambling on the tree being cut down. It wasn't and now he looks really petty.

Now the idiot gets to look at half a tree. I would rather think a little dead grass would be preferable. A friend I worked with a few years ago had a neighbor that complained to the cops that his squirrels were burying nuts on her lawn. Some people are strange. I have great neighbors here.

In my old neighborhood, when one neighbor wanted a tree gone, and the owner didn't want to take it down, he did the neighborly thing and killed his tree with diesel fuel.

I didn't say it was a **good** neighborhood.

I'm really thankful for my neighbors. We've been here for over 17 years, and the neighbors have been great, with one exception.

Man have I been lucky with neighbors (knock on wood). Our first house we had a 100 yr. old oak tree die. When I told the neighbor I was going to cut it down, he said it was close enough to the property line that he felt he should help. He brings home from work a hydraulic lift that enables us to safely trim off the limbs hanging over my deck. A couple weeks later when we had time to shred the limbs, he split the cost and used his truck to tow home the rental chipper /shredder. Really missed the guy when he and his wife divorced and she got the house.

While good fences can make good neighbors, often time is it just good people make good neighbors.

And that's the kind of neighbor we should all try to be.

Sometimes it takes two to tango. I'm just asking questions because we didn't really get both sides of the story and I would have liked to ask both parties the following questions:

1- The article stated Mr. No-tree didn't like the tree killing his grass. Mr. Tree said he had previously trimmed the tree. From what I observed, none of the lower branches were trimmed on Mr. Tree' side. Couldn't the bottom 3' have been trimmed all the way around?

2- How much of the tree's branches overhung Mr. No-tree's property line?

3- Mr. Tree said he got 'certified letters' demanding the tree become trimmed. That isn't a legal requirement, so couldn't he have just ignored it?

4- Was there an alternative trimming limit that could have made Mr. No-Tree satisfied?

5- Trimming all the way up the tree by Mr. Tree seemed just a little vindictave and petty to me.

6- I'm not sure where the property lines were, but the no grass area did not look like it extended into Mr. No-tree's yard.

From what I observed in the video (albeit, superficial and 1 sided), both parties seemed to be pretty stubborn and slightly blockheaded.
