    Thirty Two Bits

Yesterday I filled up my truck with gas and it was close to $80.00. Hurricane season starts here on Sunday, and I'll have to dig out the generator and get it ready. Filling 8 five gallon containers will be close to $160.00. During the last hurricane it cost about $1.00/hr to have it run. With gas prices now it will cost somewhere between $1.75 and $1.90/hr.

I saw a tip on this mornings news to not get gas at a station where a tanker is refueling the tanks as the tanks may stir up the tank and you may get dirt in your fuel.

This probably has been posted before, but I'll do it again. The site GAS BUDDY will take your input location and list the gas prices and their locations.

The Gas Buddy site is continually being gamed by the station owners, at least in the Columbus area, making the site worse than useless.

Older stations (ones that have been around, "forever"), I would agree with the refueling. However newer stations, with all the tank and filter requirements, are much better, and you don't get the junk in the fuel.
The station I frequent (bosses (both), brother runs), they average 6 trucks in 7 days. We had a group in town that brought his station up, to 14 that week.
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

I'm not familiar with what is "gaming" by the station owners. In my area, it's fairly accurate. I would guess that the maintenance of the site would have to do with how current the prices are.

On the way home from dropping Grand Daughter off I was stopped at a light across the street from station I usually buy gas from. The sign said 4.09.9 as I waited the sign changed to 4.11.9 and this is at a station that usually has the cheapest. Last Thursday it was 3.96.9. I will be at least $80 to fill LOML's Expedition this week. My Toyota Tacoma will be about $60 depending on when I have to fill it up. We are cutting back on driving but other things will be changing soon.

I don't even want to THINK about filling the 42-gallon tank on my beloved Suburban...

I've always filled my vehicles when they hit half a tank and even then $35-40 is not unusual. Just doesn't hurt quite as much as $70-80.

have we considered that the reason gas prices are so high is because we are all filling up Expeditions, Suburbans and All other Gas guzzlers???? ME INCLUDED...

My Neighbor across the street is form Jordan. He and his buddies buy our SUV's and Pickups that we can't afford to drive for pennies on the dollar and the sell them in the Middle East for what we paid for them. During the Gulf War the Early Iraq war I saw my 2002 model Toyota Tacoma Double cab running around with a 50 cal. or bigger mounted in the Bed. The richest over there buy new everyone else buy used and for cash according to my neighbor. The big problem in California is we don't have the mass transit system like back East. What we did have was removed after WWII, because GM, Firestone and Standard Oil pushed for it. It is pretty well documented as to what happened. Now they are try to build mass transit and it is very very very expensive. The line in Sacramento is something like 25 million a mile. Besides it is going to be hard to Californians out of their cars. I would take Light Rail here in town if it went where I want to go with our spending 3 hours on the train and Bus to go across town. Tim to go fill up LOML's Expedition. will post how much it cost.

For years, I was trying to buy small cars like my old Festiva again. Couldn't find them new, dealers laughed and said who would buy that (friends).
Now they can't hardly sell what they have.

After WWII, they took out the streetcar line, that ran two blocks from my house to downtown KC, and (from what I was told), downtown Independence. Now the area that built up was farm land back then, and while busses supliment (spelling?) the old rail car line, intercity tranportation has NOT kept pace with building and the directions things have gone.

I am fortunate, in the fact that while I have a truck (4 cylinder, 5 speed), I get reasonable mileage, and do ocassionally pick up loads on the way in, that fall on my way into work (no extra driving).
A few years ago, when I was wrenching (two jobs, 7 days a week), I had the opportunity to build/rebuild/repair other peoples toys (got the building part out of my system), and found out some of the real costs. My dream car (model and year) came up twice for sale. The first one was done, and a $10,000 gas hog (cheap version); I passed. The next one I actually looked at. Required a lot more work, but was a 6 cylinder (rare for that car, considered underpowered in those days), was labeled the wrong year (front and rear would have been different), and I actually wanted to buy. It had sold the day it arrive (one day earlier) and the owner hadn't picked it up.

So unless I fall into a major bargain, I am good.

Well, I just traded an Esclade for a SRX (and I got the six to boot) and it still runs over $50 to fill the tank, and the average mixed city/highway mileage is only about 1 to 1-1/2 mpg better. Of course I didn't downsize for that, it was so we would have a much easier time getting in and out without needing a ladder.

I drop 16 to 24,000 gallons of the stuff 5 days a week, except for the oldest most run down stations they all have super good filters between the storage tanks and the pump.
The sad thing for me is I drop all that gas five days a week and I don't get discounts or free samples . Pat
