    Suggestions to make life easier?

I don't know a lot about computers, but I do understand a little about the file system. My wife has a very hard time understanding how to work with folders and files. She is into scrapbooking, and has downloaded several small programs. To make it easy for her to find what she wants, I had her unzip folders to the desktop. But now there are too many icons. Can I make a new folder to put on the desktop, to put her downloads in? I will make a folder for scrapbooking downloads under "My Documents" or something, but until she learns to find it, a folder on the desktop would be easy for her.

Maybe I could just make a folder, and put a shortcut on the desktop. Is that the best solution for a temporary fix?

Yes, that would work. But that's only a short-term solution and will make her just as dependent on you and scared to touch anything for fear of "breaking it". Best thing is to get her taught up on the thing - the library should have some dummies book, and alway tell her that she can't break the computer even if she hits the keyboard with a hammer.

Create a folder (say, "Scrapbook") elsewhere, and move all the older folders from the desktop into the new one.
Now create a shortcut to that folder, and place this shortcut on the desktop.

Remember, you should move the existing folders to the new one, not copy.

Also, now that you are doing, you might even create the new folder as a root directory (under C:\ or D:\) instead of inside the MyDocuments. Gives you more control.

I agree with radhak and your last post, make a new folder as a root directory then give her a shortcut to that folder on the desktop. From that shortcut she can easily find her files and subfolders.

Move all her separate folders into one folder.

Then change the properties on Start-My Documents to point to this folder. Or just move all the separate folders into the My Documents folder.

Thanks for the replies. It's gonna take a while for her to get used to finding things on her own. I'll make a temporary fix for her.

How does this give you more control?
