You're definitely right about not trying it on paper. I programmed the first computer attempt to do it the way you'd work it out one by one on paper, and realized that it was eating my laptop for lunch. Had to change approaches. Hercules' brute force method definitely ain't the way to do it, unless you've got access to a couple racks of IBM's BlueGene.
