    An Apology To All

Before I start, I've got something to say (Groucho Marx quote). Last night I replied in "Finished Projects" in ryanps's thread "Briefcase". In the thread, I stated my intent was not to "hijack", or "try to steal any thunder" with my reply.

This morning I was thinking about it and realized that I did say that and meant it, but how did it appear to others? IOW, is that sufficient enough to allow the OP to appreciate the personalized responses when it's meant to help explain a part of the thread. After the fact, I felt that those reading the thread will feel it was a hijack, and I apologize for that.

As for stealing any thunder, with the work shown on this forum, it's pretty hard to do as the craftsmanship from our members is as good as it gets. I don't knowingly do that and I don't think other members do either. The way I see that end of it is in replying to a thread, it may involve describing ones own experience which may encroach on the poster's thread. We're all pretty proud of the things we make, no matter what they are, and deserve the individualized recognition. I have been guilty of posting projects or discussing my own projects on another thread. Sometimes in order to answer a question an explanation of what we've done in that situation results. Having cut and dry "yes" or "no" answers kinda defeats any community conversation. So, what I'm asking is what degree of information or discussion is objectionable?

And, while I'm in an apologetic mood (musta been a full Moon last night), for my openess. I'm a very straightforward guy, and ever since I was old enough to smack some wisenhiemer for guff I didn't want to take, I seem to rest easier. I feel like when posting, we are all just sittin' around a bar having a beer and just yaking as a group. OTOH, on the forum, I may cross the line in my responses as being confrontational or seemingly just to puff my chest, and I may have been the cause of some interactions that irritate and antagonize others. For those that have me on "ignore", somebody tell them I'm sorry.

I looked at both 'cases and thought BOTH

were great. So I don't think you'll need to apologize for stating and posting the pic of your briefcase. Ryanps' briefcase is different in some respects, and yours in others; myself I would love to have both to carry my documents to and fro in. And that's what I think is great about BT3Central, all the ideas and finished projects.

Yeah, I do this, too. And it often seems very appropriate. (In fact I think I'll start adding "Feel free to post similar projects" to my posts.) Like on that snake thread I posted a picture of a similar snake that I spotted around the house. Granted, in that case it's not something I made and didn't have any particular pride in, but I suppose it could be seen as a sort of "Hey look at me instead!"

In any case, though, I think it takes more than one person to hijack a thread -- IMHO it's not hijacked until the conversation has changed to the new topic, and I think if that happens the mods would gladly split the topic if you ask. I think it's up to all parties in the conversation, though, to keep the conversation on track. And if a person who starts to steer the conversation off topic (whether on purpose or not) is nudged or alerted, s/he should fall back in line...

I think this community does a better job than most at this... the discussions are usually civil and the participants usually all want to keep it on track. This makes it really easy to post without thinking too much -- because if you make a mistake you know you'll only get a friendly nudge. If people have to worry about fall-out from everything they post, they probably won't post as much!

I didn't think anything of it C-Man and appreciated your link to the briefcase company and I enjoyed viewing your briefcase. So please don't think you owe an apology to me. It was interesting to see your wooden handle on the briefcase as well -- never thought of that. In fact, did you have to turn that handle or just use a bandsaw or something else?

        Regards,
        Ryan

I didn't see a thing wrong with it. It was obvious from the helpful info in your post that you were not trying to one-up anybody. There was no condescension anywhere in it, and your generous contributions to this forum are gonna earn you the benefit of the doubt every time, as is your sincere introspection about it.

But perhaps this isn't the right time for me to put up a pic of the 6-piece set of luggage I built in my shop...

Maybe you can loan them to the guy with the wooden car...

C'man, your comments are usually spot-on and I think saying your piece straight out is the only way to go. Sometimes my students tell me I'm mean when I tell them their work is not up to standard. IMO, I'm just telling what they need to hear.

Agreeing to disagree when necessary is a strong social lubricant (like beer) and helps discussions run smoothly.

Now I gotta get into the shop and finish my full-size wooden 747...

I said it in the briefcase post but I will reply here, I do not think it is hijacking if you stay on the same subject. I would never object to somebody else posting something similar to a project of mine. I learn something too and I learn more after I just made something (although before is nice too).

This is more a personal preference but I get tired of the "looks great" kind of responses in the finished projects section. Sometimes I don't even do it just because I don't love reading them. I like it when there are some comments like yours Cabinetman, that add more than just a "looks great". I like to look at other peoples completed projects but I also want to learn about how they were made and a contrast to a similar project is helpful in pulling out information and thinking though how I might do something similar.

I am getting about done with my kitchen island and I promise a post. I am going to be disappointed if you do not post something similar you've done.
