Home Depot closing 15 stores - list included

    Store Closings
The Company also announced that, following a thorough evaluation of its store portfolio, the Company will close 15 underperforming U.S. stores that do not meet the Company's targeted returns. (See attached for specific store locations.) The closing stores represent less than 1% of the Company's existing store portfolio.

These closings will impact approximately 1,300 associates. The store managers and assistant store managers at these locations will be offered other store management positions within the organization. The Company will work to place the rest of the associates in other comparable store positions where available.

Wow, that stinks. I notice there's one in my area. However, there are quite a few HDs in the Twin Cities area. Maybe these suffered from being too close to other stores..?

Do you think they'll have deals going on, or just truck the stock to another location?

They closed one near me to move down the road. There were deals to be had...but generally on goofy stuff you didn't need, or want.
I like Wagoneers too. Hey...they've got wood

#4913 is pretty close to me, and (unfortunately for HD) pretty close to a large Menards. There have been times when I'd swear I was the only person in the HD. The nearby Menards, OTOH, is ALWAYS busy.

          Good riddance.

Now if we could just loose a few Lowes, Fryes, WalMarts, BestBuy, etc.

I know one in Catonsville, MD they ought to close.
Last time I went they made all the customers go through one checkout lane, while a security guard watched over us. After 10 minutes in line, I threw down the paint brushes I had stopped there to buy and left, never to return.

That was the dingiest, dreariest HD I'd ever been to.

I know the one in Lima is a small store. Since it opened they built a much larger Lowe's, and Menard's just down the road. I can see why it's not as busy. I have even heard the employees complain about they can't compete with the larger stores. That was a few years ago, last time I was in that store. I normally hit one that a little closer and in the opposite direction.

Not sure it's a good move to for them to get rid of Lima and Findlay at the same time. They are are about 25 miles from each other, but there are no others around closer. Lima people will now have to go about 50 miles to find the next closest HD store.

I don't know why people are happy to see the stores go. Frankly, I think having Lowes, Menards, and HD all within driving distance is nice. It helps drive down prices, and since they carry different brands of nearly everything, broadens the amount of items in stock.

For instance, I'm working on a custom mortar bed shower pan. Menards had the ABS 3 piece drain when Lowes and HD only had PVC, but HD had the liner kits with the necessary "dam patches", while Lowes and Menards only had the liner kit's w/o the patches... I think of the same thing with any larger chain. (best buy, etc).

It's nice that you can find the "silver lining" in having to go 3 places to get the stuff you need for one project.

What can I say? I guess I don't expect every store to carry every type of product.... That, or I'm really easy to please....

My locally owned building supply store either has everything I need, or can get it in short order. And their prices are rarely much more than the big boxes. Their service is excellent and the staff is extremely knowledgeable.

I used to LOVE Home Depot, but I've been mistreated by them too many times. Have to admit feeling a bit of schadenfreude this morning when I heard of the closings.

Some years ago I read that HD's plan was to overbuild, kill off the local competition and then start to eliminate the weak stores. Maybe it has started.

My 3 mile HD is a very small unit and it drives me nuts because they do not/cannot carry all the same stuff as the larger 5 mile and 8 mile HDs. the 3 mile HD was built to thwart Lowes from building (across the street - next to the walmart), and it worked.

Now 8 years later, Menards just announced they are building a store (the first in the area) about a mile away from the HD. The Menards is being built in conjunction with a Meijer.

A trip to HD is always an adventure - one way or another
