    Under The Spreading Chestnut Tree

Crokett the smithy stands. The muscles in his brawny arms are as strong as rubber bands.

My dad got his forge up and running a few months ago. I've been over there two or three times since then and blacksmithing is very very cool.

Just make sure you protect yourself from the heat & flying bits of hot metal. It's definately build up the strength in your hands & arms.

They must do it differently down there...

Growing up the father of the neighbor kid 2 houses down was a farrier/blacksmith (yeah, rather odd in the suburbs in the 80's). In addition to horse parts he did lots of other ornamental blacksmithing and the lean-too/shed area where he worked would feel like it was over 100 even in the middle of winter when it was -20 out.

I remember watching a smithy during a festival up here. Hottest June in ages and here he was making square nails. Hot and cool at the same time. I was around 15 feet away and was feeling way too hot from the fire.

          Hey,

There ain't no more Chestnut trees, the blight killed them all off. Maybe a nice Elm or Maple?

              I didn't. I did swear a little though.

So far I've made some hooks to hang his tools on in the forge, a hold down I needed to make a fireplace poker, the poker and over the weekend I wanted to see how thin I could get some steel so I drew out a point on what will be a marking awl. It still needs a handle.
