    Small tool gloat

I was at an estate sale earlier today and I picked up a Stanley #7 plane jointer today for $25!!! It was kind of funny as I was asking about a similar plane a couple of weeks ago. This is my 3rd plane I've bought (and ever owned) and I haven't even used the first 2 yet Also got a set of plug cutters and a bevel guide for $10.

When properly tuned, that is a very useful tool. Nice catch.

Mine came in yesterday too. Can't wait to get it sharpened and put to work. I've barely had a chance to use the #5 I got a couple weeks ago, but the little bit that I've had the chance it's been flawless.

Someone had already done most of the work to get the #5 tuned up. Sole is very flat, sides are 90 degrees to the sole and the iron is even fairly sharp.

the # 7 has a knick in the iron that I'll have to regrind, but otherwise it's in great shape too.

Good luck with yours and start making shavings.

Great find. I scout garage sales when I see them and am always on the lookout for old planes but as yet nothing found. One guy did have some but he wanted ridiculous $$$s for them.

Here's mine. No show room finish. Any good sites on how to tune it properly. I now regret not getting that Tormek I saw on CL a couple of weeks ago.

That's a keeper! a diamond in the rough...

You can get rid of most of the rust with 000 steel wool and Fantastic or a similar orange cleaner. From the picture it doesn't look like it would need eloctrolysis. I personally would not touch the black finish (japanning) unless it's more than 50% gone, also would resist temptation to strip tote and refinish (which would harm collectable value). I would just clean and put a coat of tung oil on it. I lightly coat remaining iron with machine oil to protect, also can apply paste wax.

                Congrats!
