    My life in pennies

Along with woodworking, my Grandfather had a hobby of coin collecting.

So about 20 years ago I thought it would be neat, in strange tribute way, to collect one penny for each year I have been alive. So I got a coin wrapper and started filling it up.

Sure I could buy proof sets, but my goal was just to get the pennies from everyday transactions.

Today I received my 2008 penny, (I don't look for them quite as hard as I used too ).

If all goes well, in 2009 the coin wrapper will be filled. (This was a much better idea 20 years ago!).

Though, at times, in a Rod Serling way, I am a bit nervous about the possible elimination of the penny from our currency .

have a great day, er year

    Russ,

Why not take a nice board and and a 3/4" forstner and mount them in rows or some fancy pattern. I suggest that whatever design you use be open ended. Not good to tempt fate.

I use a new penny to date things I make. A shallow 3/4" hole on the bottom or obscure part, a little epoxy and a shiny new penny. Viola. I haven't found any 2008's yet.

I have 65 Silver Dollars. When I was younger my Dad's Uncle used to give a silver dollar for my Birthday after he passed my parent did untill they passed. Now my wife or sister find one to give me. No particular date but these are the real ones that when you had one in you pocket you knew you had money. Like the idea of signing your work with coin. I may have go back and find coins to put in the little things I made when each Grand Child was born. Probably will be the New quarters as the oldest is 6 and the youngest is 4 so it shouldn't be to hard.

I guess the design needs to be linear or modular. I first saw the use of a coin to date a project about six months ago.

Silver dollars! Heck, I will trade you!!!! That is a very cool.

I used to collect coins as a kid and I still have the habit of looking at the edges of dimes and quarters to see if I got a silver one in change - a few years ago I got a silver dime and a few months ago a silver quarter. I know, not much for 30 years or so of looking, but it is pretty cool when I find one nonetheless.

Just think, one day we will think about this time and marvel that we were still using actual, physical money.

You are right about that. Doesn't seem that long ago that just about all my transactions were cash and now most are with a debit card.
