Lowes and HD FREE Kids Projects

I have been looking for some activities to do to get my kids involved with WW and think I found the perfect solution.

It turns out that both the Lowes and HD in my area run a special program with kids projects built in the store. The HD program runs once a month (first Saturday), while the Lowes program runs every other Saturday.

The HD program gives each kid a free apron and kit when they start (last time it was a planter). You sit down and build it with them (20-30 minutes) and when they finish they get a certificate and pin (for the apron) and get to keep both the apron and project. It's been a great way to spend a Saturday morning with them. This program is free . Here is a link (call for the next date in your area and if you need to register - I did not).

The Lowes program is called "Build & Grow" and is very similar (and also no cost). They give you a free project and apron to start, as well as safety glasses. At the end you get a certificate and patch (for the apron) as well as keeping the apron and glasses (though they as you to bring the goggles back if you come back for another project). Overall if you are looking for something to do on a Saturday morning with the kids or grandkids that is fun, educational, and free, I don't see how you can go wrong with these.

our kids started by going to the home depots. but now they only go the lowes. they live the projects there better. there was a time, when hd's use to repeat the projects every year.

these programs are pretty good. infact, my favorite is the lowes projects. they are make out of 1/4" plywood, pre-drilled holes, nice "chrome plated" nails and very good project ideas. well thought out projects and more complex than home depots.

home depots are usually made out of 1/2" pine, regular nails , real rough and the projects aren't as good looking when done.

I've been meaning to take my son to the ones at Lowe's for the past year but it always seems like we have something else going on. I wished they would do those on Sundays also.

Edit, I found Home Depot's clearly listed, but not Lowe's age.

I take my grandsons to the BORG. The youngest is four. Last month we built race cars. They went together easily and looked great.

Take ear protectors! 20 to 30 kids pounding nails on a sheet of plywood is LOUD!

I have done the one at Lowes with the kids. They have some nice projects for the kids to make. They have done a race car, tool box, golf game, and bird house. They are pretty simple projects for the kids.

The Lowes by me has a board at the entrance that lists what the upcoming projects are.

Thanks for posting - I have been taking my kids to HD for a while now, but did not know Lowes has one too. Shall check the next date there asap.

As far as age, my daughter is 4 and my son is 2. Daughter loves it, but my son seemed intimidated by the crowds and noise.

I would think the general limit would be 4, but a motivated 3 year old might do OK as well.

Best part is that even when my son lost interest (about 2 minutes), we just picked up the stuff and he went with mom. We decided to just finish it up later at home, while my daughter and I completed hers (about half an hour total).

Per the Lowes web link above, the next project is a land sail, followed by a memory box (the latter being a nice Mother's Day gift the kids can make).

Thanks buckeye, I'm going to try & take my son by this weekend. I may call & check 1st though. Somewhere in my memory it seems like they told me that they want you to pre-register sometime the week before.
