Finally made it to another music store over the weekend and test drove a few pianos. There were about 5 from Yamaha and 1 from Casio that the sales person steered us towards. The Yamahas all had a similar keyboard action but each had their own sound - which surprised me - and only one sounded piano-like to my ears. The Casio sounded like it was sampled from two different pianos. What from I've read, the sound is less important than the feel, but it has to be good enough not to be distracting.

We've since agreed that a console style piano wouldn't be portable enough for us so it's going to have to be one that can be taken off a stand and carried. Of the ones we test drove, the Yamaha P140 would fit the bill. That said, there are a couple of Roland pianos (FP-4 and FP-7) I'd like to compare to the Yamaha P140. They Rolands are similar in electronics to each other and comparable to the P140. All three have a different keyboard action though and there are strong proponents for each.
