Router Upgrade, no not that type of router

Ever heard of dd-wrt ( for all you computer geeks out there)

I just updated the firmware on my buffalo whr-hp-54g with this open source firmware

it unlocks every feature of my broadcom chipset, and turns my $60 router into a $600 beast with the ability to play with the transmit power on my router

default power is 28mW, I could turn it up to 251mW w/out changing the internals of the software loaded on the router ( this would probably burn up my router, but wow, I could laser beam a hole in my wall with 251mW)

    woo-hoo

When its turned up to 251 mw can the Dust collector keep up with it and does it make a lot of noise? Just wondering.

        Firmware

I don't think my Porter-Cable has firmware. In fact I haven't seen a comm port to connect it up to my computer??

Sorry, I couldn't quite hear over the beanie whirr...

Do you have to rewire for 220 to get the 251 mw?

I recommend being a bit more conservative with the power, you won't likely burn it up but based on the analysis I've seen the signal gets noisy. I keep my set around 40mw which seems to be it's "sweet spot".

DD-WRT is great, and it seems that buffalo router is the preferred match for it.

I think DD-WRT is 'dedicated downdraft - with rotation transcention.

Wasn't that on one of the star trek episodes?
Why doesn't the word 'planing' show up in my computer spell check?

I'd love to be able to turn up the power on my netgear... My reception is really bad.

I had to turn off the SPI Firewall, and my throughput doubled, I guess that is what the processor over-clocking is for on the advanced tabs... any thoughts?

Just in case you haven't found it already, there is a pretty good page on the dd-wrt wiki about this router:

I'd love to have that for my Netgear but I don't think there is a version made for my router.

I picked up a Gen 3 Linksys that it was originally written for. Never got around to the project as my whole network is wired, and no laptop yet.

From what I have read, it is a LOT easier now to install it on some machines (just uploading the new firmware).

I would avoid pushing 251mw out that router. If you are having signal issues, I would look at relocating the router rather than push it up that high. 100mw should cover most of your house.

To confuse the issue further for you...I don't know what dBi gain antenna you are using but if we assume it is a 4dBi stock antenna, you would actually be transmitting ~625mw.
