Toe Injury -- Need Advice from Drs or Anyone that can Help

last night while playing volleyball (bear foot in sand), i managed to twist my toe next to the pinkie on my left foot under my weight as i ran into the concrete perimeter around the court, as i was trying to keep from falling. it hurt like you wont believe, i sat out a bit and returned to playing (volleyball), all along limping.

when i got home 2 1/2 hr later, i moved the toe next to it (middle toe) over and saw that the two had turned red+purple and there was a shade of purple on the top as well. i iced it at that time and took iobruphine for swelling and went to sleep

this morning, it is swollen, now purple on top (middle part) and on the sides (also on the middle third of the toe). it still hurt, but not as much, cant put any weight on it.

what should i do? what will a doctor do anyways, other than take the copay? please hurry, because i really dont want to delay what i need to do any further.

i also want to ask, what good would getting an xray be? if all they are going to do is tape it up, then are xrays of any benefit.

when i bend all the toes on my left foot, it also bends aswell, but , after the 90degrees, there is pain when i put more pressure. now putting wieght on it forces the toe upward, and that is what hurts A LOT!

    thanks a bundle!!

BTDT, sounds like you might have broken it. I tape it to the one next to it and take something for the discomfort. Within a day or so it subsides.

I am not a doctor nor have I ever played on on TV, I have however played doctor.

You may have broken or cracked or even shattered the bone. Bones are typically much softer than concrete. It is worth the Xray if you ask me. The purple color and swelling tells me something is wrong, however the pain is another indicator.
It could effect lots of things if left untreated.

Peace of mind is worth the co-pay. It could be something that if left untreated will lead to loss of blood flow to the toe, then gangrene and the loss of the toe or even the foot.

Given the choice of being right and they only tape it up and take your money against being wrong and much more is lost I would opt for the chance of being right.

Bill, I'm not a Doctor nor do I play one on TV I just like playing doctor.

I'm not a doctor, but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn Express. I suggest you go to a real doctor for an opinion. Whatever the diagnosis, you can get some pain pills.

Could be that it will heal itself if you tape it to the next one for a few days, but...

It could also be much worse. I wouldn't recommend that you take any chances. See the Doc.

well thanks for siding with my wife! because of the overwhelming majority thought i should go, i thought i'd listen.

so i went, and it is broken. no other damage. he said that when i goes black/purple/red, its a good indication that something is broken. it should take around three weeks to heel. so he just taped the two toes togather and sent me on my way.

                now back to the backyard!

But he taped them together in the right position, which doesn't always happen if you do it yourself... DAMHIKT

he told me that it needed to be on there for two to three weeks. so i asked him how about showering...... he's like, you take it off and retape it your self, and he handed my some tape. i think duct tape may be better quality

thanks for making me go, seriously.

I broke a toe (the pinky on the right foot) and it indeed was quite painful. Rammed it into a leg on a couch while the leg was swinging forward for my next stride. Doctor did not even take an Xray just said yep you broke it just tape it to the next toe over and cut off the end of a shoe or wear sandals for a few weeks. I chose the sandals. Bad part is my job requires me to be on my feet constantly. Limping for 4 weeks was no fun.

I wish it were so simple for Pedro and El Duque. Maybe they should try taping instead of special shoes and new deliveries.

Look at it this way, if the bone was broken completely in 2 pieces & the break was offset any at all, it would have healed that way. A strange note: Jack Daniels was supposedly to have broken his toe on a floor safe, not getting medical attention, & infection set in & he died from it. Better safe than sorry.

Considering what damage there was, it should say concprintsintoe

I broke the second toe in from the pinkie side once. Mad at the cat for tearing some curtains from the wall. I figured I better sit down a cool off before I hurt something and promptly kicked my tool box at the end of the couch. Doctor told me it would take six weeks if it was a bad sprain....month and a half if it was broken.
