Unless I missed something, I don't think anyone here is blaming the gun industry, or guns themselves.
I don't have anything at all against gun ownership. But I just don't understand why you think a test is not a good idea, unless you have a problem with our government getting too big (which it very well could be already). But the above quote has nothing to do with what Paul proposed (the test).
Safety, pertaining to gun ownership, saves lives. At the very least, it reduces the number of deaths due to someone handling a gun, who has no idea about gun safety.

Why not to use a gun to drill a hole

When I read the title of the thread I thought it was a story about a modern Artist using bullet holes in wood working instead of driling holes. Sad and stupid story.Leave a comment:

I will.. you don't need to pass a test to buy a car and drive it illegally. Did you pass a test to buy the knife set in your kitchen? How many people die a year from unlicensed drivers and knives? hmmmm....Leave a comment:

Do you need a license or a class in order to have a kid in the first place? You can't teach common sense..
Too many kids die because they are forgotten in a car seat..
Too many kids die because people lose track of them and they get hit by a car..
Too many kids die because they fall into an unsecured swimming pool..
Are there any required classes for that?
I have a problem when guns and the gun industry are blamed for an inviduals lack of common sense. Do we blame knife manufacturers? Do we blame car seat manufactures? Do we blame the pool manufactures? How about beer manufacturers? Little Johnny never would have drank that beer if it wasn't for brand XYZ. One of these years the blame will be passed back to the individual who caused the problem, instead of some scapegoat.
Not to mention the fact that our media sensationalizes everything..Leave a comment:

and remember two things...
Two of the things I learned in ROTC in the early 70's:
1) A gun is ALWAYS loaded. Never ever believe it is empty.
2) A bullet will travel a very long way.
#1 wouldn't have helped in this sad case, but point #2 might have caused him to think first.

That's right. I don't think it's been published, but I know I haven't seen the "Idiot's guide to gun ownership".

Wasn't trying to say that at all. If you are going to have a gun, you should know how to use it. But knowing how to use it does not equate to knowing when to use it, or where to keep it. Putting an idiot through a class will not cure him.Leave a comment:

That's true. And taking a test for a driver's license won't keep you from getting drunk, and getting behind the wheel. But you still need to pass a test to get a driver's license. I don't know how anyone could argue that taking a test to own a gun isn't a good thing.

I've been thinking about this story. It was an incredibly stupid thing he did, but....
I know I might be in the minority here, but you don't send people to jail for being stupid.
This guy will have to live with what he did for a lifetime. Assuming he loved his wife, he has lost quite a bit because of a stupid action. Should he be charged with involuntary manslaughter? Maybe so. Should he get jail time for it? Not in my opinion. The man is probably suffering enough.

I'm taking a gun class next week. I don't think it will sound too crazy anymore when we're discussing safety issues and I raise my hand and say, "In addition, we shouldn't use guns to drill holes inside the house."
Well, I probably should have a print out of the story with me anyway, just in case.Leave a comment:

Exactly. And where in the class will they tell you not to drill holes in the wall of your house with this gun, Don't use this gun to loosen lug nuts on your car, and don't open beers with it?Leave a comment:

Absolutely! Way too risky without one. I have a feeling that guy will think twice before shooting again.

Hate to tell you this, but if common sense doesn't tell you to keep your guns away from your kids, a gun class won't help you...Leave a comment:

Guest repliedIMHO anyone purchasing a gun for any reason should be required to take a class on gun safety first. Far too many kids die or are seriously injured by idiots that leave guns around the home.As a shooter and a hunter this is appalling to me. Beyond any firearms safety class that he should have had common sense should tell you that this is an unacceptable risk for everybody. Of course, I believe it was Will Rogers who said that he didn't know why they called it **common** sense when there was so little of it about!Leave a comment:
