    Snakes Didn't Get This One

We've got snakes in our yard, Racers about 3' long, and some pretty big Eastern Indigo's. From time to time I'll see one of them slithering away with a big lump about midstream. I'm thinkin' mice or rats.

Well I had set up some traps (with peanut butter) on the crossrail 2x4's of my outside picket fence. Where the fence sections are connected, I have an extra picket to cover the ends of the 2x4's.

I was outside with my dogs and they both started sniffing around and found this rat that was stuck between the extra picket and the row of pickets. It was a good size one, maybe pregnant, but the head was sticking out and the thing was wiggling, trying to get loose.

I took the dogs inside, and went back outside and thought I could go to the other side of the property and pick that sucka off with my Marlin 60. But, unfortunately we have laws here about discharging firearms in a residential neighborhood, so I took my shovel and zapped it.

Isn't it peachy when your dogs roll in the carcass of one of those snakes?

Had a pet rat growing up... It was one of the smartest critters I ever met.

But still, my snake's gotta eat...

Kids had rats when they were small. Really great pets. The best story tho, is the day the Fuller brush man came by. As my wife tells the story, she was vacuuming the house, and had Justin (my son's mature rat-really good size) sitting on her shoulder while she was working. Door bell rang and she answered the door, forgetting that Justin was on one shoulder and his tail wrapped around the back of her neck and ending on her other shoulder. Let's just say the Fuller man left rather quickly without selling her anything that day!

Same exact thing happened back in my teen years, when my mother answered the Avon lady's knock with her favorite of my boa constrictors in her hair... The poor woman spun and ran, and sent her husband back the next day to collect her sample case!

I cleaned out a Hardee's late one night with a 5' boa draped around the back of my neck hiding just under my coat. The bars had just closed & the place was packed at the counter. I turned to a girl standing beside me & told her I wanted her to meet my friend Charlie. Just as I opened my jacket a little, he raised his head & looked around & a screaming riot erupted towards the door. Even some of the guys were screaming like girls. It was hilarious.

Actually, I considered my .357 but it probably would have taken out part of my neighbor's house. Talk about overkill.

I doubt you'll get fried for it, but I'd rather have the snakes than the rats. We had a bull snake in our yard the year before last. It was probably 4' - 5' long, and pretty heavy. My wife found it, and called me out to the back yard. It's not a venemous snake, but I wasn't going to give it a kiss. We just let it stay, but it wandered away on it's own.
