We've got snakes in our yard, Racers about 3' long, and some pretty big Eastern Indigo's. From time to time I'll see one of them slithering away with a big lump about midstream. I'm thinkin' mice or rats.
Well I had set up some traps (with peanut butter) on the crossrail 2x4's of my outside picket fence. Where the fence sections are connected, I have an extra picket to cover the ends of the 2x4's.
I was outside with my dogs and they both started sniffing around and found this rat that was stuck between the extra picket and the row of pickets. It was a good size one, maybe pregnant, but the head was sticking out and the thing was wiggling, trying to get loose.
I took the dogs inside, and went back outside and thought I could go to the other side of the property and pick that sucka off with my Marlin 60. But, unfortunately we have laws here about discharging firearms in a residential neighborhood, so I took my shovel and zapped it.

We had a bull snake in our yard the year before last. It was probably 4' - 5' long, and pretty heavy. My wife found it, and called me out to the back yard. It's not a venemous snake, but I wasn't going to give it a kiss.
We just let it stay, but it wandered away on it's own.
