Dell laptop shuts down when lid closes?!

i have a dell latitude c800. i never use to have this problem before. when ever i close the lid of the laptop, it shuts down. no matter the what the setting is in the power management dialoge box. even if it set to "do nothing or standby" when lid is closed. i cant find out any other reason why it is doing this.

edit: i am runnning windows 2000 pro on it.

    any one know why?

    thanks,

I am trying to remember if the CMOS has a setting also. You might see if their is something in there causing your problem.

I ran across that with a friend's laptop before. After setting everything in Power Management and the BIOS to do nothing, when anything happens, ever, under any circumstances to where in theory the only way anything would happen ever is if you use the power button to turn it on or the Start button to turn it off.........it still did that and went into sleep mode that it would not recover from without a hard reboot.

Good luck. I never did find out the problem with it. My final recommendation to him was to call Dell tech support, or buy a Toshiba. I sincerely dislike Dell.

It may have something to do with the scroll-lock key, as I recall, which can toggle such a function. If not, there must be something in the BIOS regarding power-off options, lid closure, etc.

Google "Dell ACPI lid'. It should help to get you started toward a fix. I'm on the run right now so can't look into it. Perhaps Dell uses their own application for "laptop features" in addtion to the standard windows power manager.

rjwaldren, i will do the search later on tonight and see what i come up with.

this problem was never there before. i just use to use the windows setting and it worked perfectly.

i did check to bios and it was set to the correct setting. i even did a search in the dell forum and no one seems to have that problem except one person and no one gave an answer to it. it figures

when i close the lid, it shuts down. but when i open the lid, it restarts automatically. i dont even have to hit the start button.

Tale a clipper and cut the little pin off that sticks up and senses the lid if you don't want it to do anything. Or open it up and disconnect/remove the switch.

I was just looking through the c800 docs, it looks like the only place to change these settings through the windows power manager/advanced tab. If everything is correct there and in bios then there are few options unless you've changed/upgraded something lately. Most everything that came up under ACPI lid for the c800 were linux related.

Have you changed anything lately? If you just press the lid switch while watching the screen and LED's, does it just shutoff or does it seem like it's trying to do something first?

I believe there is a power management setting for that. you can have it shut down, go to sleep, do nothing, and possibly some other stuff.

last year my computer crashed. and i ended up formatting the harddrive and reinstalling everything. during that process i did go to dell's website to get all the current drivers for my comptuer and components.

as soon as i had done that, the hinge broke and since then the top has not been closed. i just replaced it this morning and closed it and this happened.

the pin does not accutate the shut down. i tried and held the pin and closed it and the computer shut down. actually, there is a magnet just beside the pin that must contact something under the key board when it closes to activate the internal switch so it knows the lid is closed.

                    well that is the latest.

Maybe im reading it wrong, but it sounds as if you replaced the hinge and then this started happening? I'm no whiz when it comes to laptops, but isnt there a ribbion cable that goes to the display and any buttoins that are on the lid? I had a similar problem with mine except it would just blank out the screen and you had to curse alot before the screen came back on. it turned out the connectors on my ribbon were broken so it would cause it to disconnect... Is it possible the ribbon cable might be pinching or shorting when the lid is closed?

                      Just a thought....
