New Toy!

I was in Cabella's Friday evening looking for pool balls and cues. No luck, but browsing through the 'Pre-owned' rifles I came across 2 Stevens model 87b's. This is the rifle I learned to shoot with. That gun went to my half-brother (It was originally his Dad's) and is long gone.

Last night the better, and cheaper, of the 2 came home with me. Marked at $99, I got it for $80.



May have to line up some cans out back this afternoon!

When I was a kid, mine was a bolt action, that I called a "pinger". I still have it somewhere. I also have a Marlin 60. The 22's are great target rifles.

My learner was a Remington Model 12, pump action with iron sights. I still have it. One day I came home from college and my dad had bought himself a brand-new bolt-action scoped magnum .22 and was doing a little target shooting in the back yard. I went in, grabbed the Model 12, and squeezed off five rounds as fast as I could pump it. All five were in the bull.

He gave me grief for outshooting him for the next 20 years....

I was never able to duplicate that group.

Just put a dozen rounds down range into a couple of coke cans filled with water (Until the first hit!). Enough to adjust the rear sight for about a 25 yard aim. I need to build a target backer from scrap ply so I can get some practice. .22 round is bad about ricocheting!

I want to try the #12 shot loads if they will feed right on semi-auto. That would make it a good defensive gun for LOML.

It feels good to have an old friend in your hands again, doesn't it, Don!? The only youth shooting I had was in a school shooting club that we did in an indoor range that we hogged out from underneath the auditorium ("Imagine doing that today - and housing the firearms in a weak, wooden cloak closest in the classroom!). We used some surplus,single shot Mossbergs with a peep sight. I wish I could find one. Nice score, Pappy! I'm happy for you!
