This Is A Real Eye Opener!!!

This clip re-enforces my respect for dogs as animals. I've had German Shepherds all my life, and have trained them for dual personality. This is an unfortunate incident. This clip is in very slow motion.

I would think the mistake was when the one fellow( shirt and tie) held the dogs head with two hands and looked into his face. Dogs take that as an agressive action.

      Dogs are animals?

About 20 years ago my nephew age 6 was playing with his 4 friends, all brothers. they had been playing for hours. His friends had a St. benard, that was having a great time running with the kids . For reasons unknown to us the Dog turned and grabed him by the face as in the video. It tore his face off . 12 operations followed. hes now 25, surgery has elliminated almost all of his scars. He is an avid dog lover has 4 wolf shepard mixes. We put the dog down,my friend was afraid this might happen again.DOGS are animals.PS I LOVE DOGS

I think that was a warning bite, not a real one. The german shephard police dog is too smart for that. If you look at the clip closely, he opened his jaw but didn't bit down on him.

This was not the whole clip. I saw the original clip, and the dog did bite down requiring the reporter to get stitches. There was lotsa blood.

As a pediatrician I can tell you that no dog, even the friendliest family mutt, can be considered safe around young children.

Dog body language 101: When a dog's ears are pinned back and they are licking their chops, they are feeling stressed. You should always withdraw from a dog behaving in this manner. That video clearly shows a reporter and handler that didn't understand what the dog was trying to tell them.

In terms of submissiveness, never (EVER) stare into the eyes of a strange dog. But, when training your own dog it is acceptable to stare into their eyes until they glance a away. When your dog does this they are submitting. Whatever you do, DO NOT BE THE ONE TO GLANCE AWAY. Finally, if they are hesitant to glace away, in a stern voice say, "ARE YOU LOOKING AT ME?" or "DON'T YOU DARE LOOK AT ME." A trainable dog will immediately look away.

BTW, a dog that won't submit should be re-purposed. It is NOT a family companion type dog.

I think this dog was reacting to what it perceived as an act of aggression towards it's partner by the one it lashed out at. If you consider the fact that the dog was between the bitten person and it's partner and the person moved in a manner that was considered aggressive by the dog, so he did what he was trained to do and that was to protect his handler.Sad thing is the dog gets blamed for the guys stupid mistake.

I have experience from multiple sides of this. From knowing a K9 officer and his family, and dealing with the dog in both work and play mode, and knowing someone who once had a puppy from a line of them (always told their was some lineage to the police ones).

Then as a child, some neighbors moved, because of me. (shared drive), I have told the story before, but on the fourth of July (already not a good dog/animal day), I ran over to their car and held my cork gun over my head (too young for fireworks). My nose was 98% bitten off. (not enough to stitch, had to bandage it to my face).

Been on multiple sides, they can and normally are great, but I could/would put one down in a heartbeat (near attack by a pair of Pits on MY property).
She couldn't tell the difference between the escape pod, and the bathroom. We had to go back for her.........................Twice.

If a dog has teeth, it will bite. Just a matter of who and when.

I had a Siberian that would not submit. Still the best animal I ever had. Friendly to everyone unless someone in his family was threatened.

Most folks forget that German Shepherds are guard dogs by breeding, whether they have been trained or not. More people are bitten by them each year than any other dog.

When they have been trained as guard or working dogs, they have been taught that sometimes it IS ok to bite people. You can admire a policeman's gun too, but from a distance...
