    Work From Home Jobs

Well after being married to the chief bottle washer and supposedly a moderator for this site, I am making what I think is my first "thread". Aren't you all proud?

I am looking to make some extra money. I know there are legitamite work from home jobs. I already have a full-time job but would like to make some extra money to get rid of some debt and maybe get a head for a change. I have been looking on line and soooo many seem like scams. I don't want to "invest" any money or pay someone to find the leads. So this is where you all come in. You always are a wealth of knowledge so I thought I would ask if anyone here does something like this and how do I find a reputible job online.

Thanks for putting up with my long winded post. It comes natural

    Adele,
To begin with, what are your strengths (skills, aptitude)? And what would you like to do?

A friend of mine was interested in computer graphics, but had not worked in it. So she trolled the local craigslist listings for work in that line that allowed tele-commuting. She began by enhancing and fixing small web-sites, whose owners were too busy/scared/non-techie to do it themselves. Months down the line she graduated to bigger stuff. Of course, she finally ended up taking up a full-time job, but that's a different issue. She says working from home allowed her to 'cheat' - asking her hubby to help when she was lost, reading up extra, etc. But in the end, she learned a lot on-the-job.

CL is a good place to start out - you can see a ton of jobs, for all sorts, not just computer related.
It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.

I have a work from home job. I got it by working in an office and then moving about 150 miles away from it. Sorry, can't help too much.

I will say that your best bet is probably to find something where you head into an office once in a while, otherwise you're going to get stuck with a really boring data entry job or something.

I work from home full time as an online UI and graphics consultant. In my field this isn't really an unusual scenario. I've got more work than I know what to do with and I work with major companies. Been independent for 4+ years now and have made more money than I ever did when going into an office and I have absolutely 000000 work-related stress. However, like the above poster alluded to, the best way to do it is to leverage your existing skills with your existing career and make it work from home. I recommend checking out a book called "4 Hour Work Week" by Timothy Ferriss. He's got some good insight and perspectives into getting yourself out of a 9 to 5 situation and pulling off what the above poster pulled off.

No one has mentioned the option of starting an ebay business selling power tools you might find just lying around the house.

            Sorry--not helpful, I know.

Most of the opportunities come from the three "C's"... Crafts, Computers and Childcare... All have both advantages and disadvantages. Don't do anything where you start by giving money to someone else, or where you are not sure about who you are working for. Don't be afraid to venture on you own if the investment is minimal and you can afford the time to develop your market and your business. Ebay businesses can be winners, or you can eat up all your profit in listing fees and shipping costs, so consider all your potential expenses, as well as your competition, before you start down that path. If you are crafty, you can build an online business around that, or go the flea market route.

well, if you find one, let us know, because my wife also wants to do something, but with all sorts of things that are out there, its just overwhelming. that extra income will really be helpful in paying bills and getting ahead as you mentioned.

                      Adele,
I spent days looking for something like this and was not able to find something. I am sure you will on the other hand. I was looking into doing some medical transcription type things but the paperwork I got on it cost a lot of money just to take the course which was an on-line type class. I figured that would be the way to go with Thomas being so young and daycare being so expensive. I know there are work at home jobs that are legit and right for people but all the ones that I found were a little sketchy on the details.

Good luck on finding something, And congrats on your first thread.

A friend of mine just mentioned last night that she got started selling handmade crafts on www.etsy.com. She speaks very highly of it.

My wife used to do copy editing and writing from home before the kids came along. There are sites to help with this type of work, too (e.g. www.elance.com).

There's a lady I met here in town that makes slings (baby wearing) and she seems to be doing very well with that from home.

I agree with redhak -- once you figure out what you want to do, there are probably serveral online resouces already out there to help you do it...

If you send me a SASE with $5 I will gladly send you a sure fire way to make money from home in your spare time with no experience and a small investment. Some assembly required.

I work a full time job but I do pretty well being a Craigslist hound in my free time. I stick to stuff I know like Tools, Auto accessories, computers, networking gear, guitars etc. I use CL search from www.craigslistcompanion.com and it makes it very fast and easy to see Craigslist items in thumbnail views. The searching is the easy part. It's the driving around to pick stuff up that gets time consuming. I will either resell it on CL or Ebay depending on the item.

I exploit the buy low and sell high theory and I do $300-1000 a month pretty regularly. My wife likes the fact that I can use it for my hobbies plus paid for a Disneyland trip 2 years ago.
