Well, I almost - very almost stepped into it.
We're looking for a cheaper reliable car to replace my wife's Kia with, and after looking on CL for months, finally this weekend saw something worthwhile. But if it sounds too good to be true, it.... probably is.
Anyway, it's a Corolla, 2000, with Carfax report for 3,400. Emailed, another person emailed back in 50 minutes, the car is available, but is in New Orleans, I put the money onto an escrow account, they send the car to me and I have it for 3 days to inspect, then if I want to cancel it, I notify the escrow company, they send me my money back, and come pick up the car again.
This morning I got the cash, ready to Moneygram (their preferred way) to the escrow agent, and decided to check a little more. The escrow web site seemed a little unsecure (no SSL certificate, for example) and a google search came up with nothing, although, supposedly the escrow company has been in business since 2001. Searched a bit more, and came across some posts of people who'd been scammed, by a different website, but it looks nearly identical to the one I was sent to. - They even have a BBB certificate (the clue was that it's hosted on their own site)
Anyway, beware, this has been going on a while, and they change the copmany/website every few days/weeks, once they caught enough people and need to disappear again.
Plus the "person" on the other end was getting too pushy trying to "close" the deal.
Here's the email:

Hello,
The car is in a very good condition, no flaws or
dents, no scratches or any kind of damage, no flood or wrecked.
Let me explain you the process:
If you register to website and send me your user name I will start a transaction with you
on the site. You will have the car for 3 days for inspection.I will pay for the shipping and escrow fees.
In excellent shape and clear title the car passed the test emissions.
It will be shipped to you with all the documents you need for registration.I will start the shipping process
immediately after the company secure your payment and you will receive the car in 3-4 days after that.
If you will like the car you can keep it and you can register it on your name.
After that you will give the okay to the Company to give me
the money you sent them .If you will not like the car the Company will ship the car
to another potential client in U.S. ( but I don't think that will be the case ), and give you back
the all money you sent. Now register and send me your user name.
Thank you.

Hi George,
I did not realize the car was that far. Who will pay the shipping, and what if I decide I don't like it? If the car is dropped of at my house, I suppose I can take it to a mechanic for an inspection, right?
Thanks,
Johan

Hello,
I appreciate your fast response to my ad regarding the toyota corolla.
As you've seen from the pictures my toyota is in perfect condition. It has no rust or dents and it's accident free. If you want to see the CarFax report I can provide it for you. Here is the VIN Number:1NXBR12E0YZ325342. My asking price is $3400. I'm only selling it so cheap because I need to sell it asap due to some personal problems. Mileage is 63918. I serviced the corolla regularly and it's in perfect condition.
Because I don't have a lot of spare time I have appointed Auto Safe Trade (www.auto-safe-trade.com) to handle the transaction for me. They will make the title transfer, arrange the money exchange and deliver the car to your location. At this time the corolla is at their office in New Orleans,LA.
The transaction will be made only by using the terms stated above. If you are interested and you have the money available, please register an account Auto Safe Trade and get back to me with the e-mail address you used to register (registration it's free and they won't ask for sensitive personal details). As soon as I hear from you I will initiate the transaction and after that they will handle everything.
After we agree on the terms they will deliver the car to your house for a 3-days inspection period and if you like it, you can have it.

We are looking at a Prius (probably close on it tonight) and this guy just won't stop. He finally explained it the other day when we started to tell him we were going to buy - we're his first sale, ever. I know that could be a tactic, but I believe it - he reaks of desperation.
