    Plywood Pricing.

I went out friday and picked up two 4x8 sheets of veneer core oak ply. I'm building a sound cabinet for a church. I payed $130(cdn) with tax for the two sheets. I'm just wondering what pricing is like around the continent?

BTW: I think I payed a fair price.

Around my parts, it runs $40 a sheet, plus or minus $5. Right now it is at $42. BORG prices also.

I just bought a sheet of 3/4", well not really...something just shy of that (measures .685"), birch cabinet grade at the blue box for something over $34. The oak was $44 plus some change.
As a comparison, I stopped in at the C. Lmbr 'Yard' and asked some prices. He said he had some 3/4" fir BC plywood for $39.99. I've been in the retail business long enough to know that that is $40!! I mentioned that the price was about what cabinet grade goes for and he checked, bless him anyway! He quoted me $37.99 for 3/4" birch AB cabinet grade. And, to make things even more interesting, he could not tell me how many plys either of them were. A real salesmen I'd say!
The stuff I got at the blue store has 11 plys of various kinds of 'similar-to-balsa-wood' and a really thin, I mean REALLY thin, birch veneer. Man they must have found a way to spray that stuff on to get it that thin.
If I was to be building something nice, I'd go for the better stuff for a few dollars more, and it is a full 3/4"! Or is it? Now I'm wondering!
Why doesn't the word 'planing' show up in my computer spell check?

        Good thread.

I paid $105 for a 4 x 8 of high grade 3/4 maple ply. The place I bought it from is committed to renewable and domestic sources and clean construction so it's U.S. sourced and free of nasty stuff that may find its way into the lower end stuff. The guy even admitted he knew he was priced higher than the other guys, but for the quality he can offer he was OK with it. Was surprised at how much it cost, but I figured I'm building 2 bookshelves out of it, so in the grand scheme, it's not really a whole lot of money. At least one time won't hurt. And it really is a beautiful piece.

Last time I bought the cheap chinese 3/4 something like birch I think it was $30/sheet. Last 3/4 I bought was AB pine and was about the same price and much better quality (although a different pile at the same store was pretty bad). Lowes and Home Depot typcially get about $40 for birch and about $50 for oak. Quality varies widely, however, depending on what they have in stock. It is really nice to be able to look it over and compare a couple places. It seems like the last 3/4 baltic birch was not over $50 for a 5x5 sheet, may have even been less. I remember thinking it was going to be more.

I am not as concerned about the quantity of plies as I am what the plies look like. Worst is wavy layers. Poplar or birch is better than softwood generally. Fewer voids is better. If several sheets on the pile are warped, the sheet that you buy that isn't warped may well be after you cut it.

Menards has the low grade birch 3/4 ply for $30/ sheet. I use it for carcasses where no one will see either side typically. And it's not that bad in quality.

BB 1/2" ply at Menards is $50. 3/4" is $65 or so, I think.

Lowes has Oak ply for About $35-40, and MDF 3/4" in the $20's.

The only lumberyard near the Twin Cities has the following prices:

            Maple pre-finished semi-gloss- 3/4" $88.32
            1/2" $88.26

            1/4" BB 5'x5'- $32.70
            1/2" BB 5'x5'- $52.20

3/4" Oak rotary cut veneer- $78/ sheet
            Shop Grade- $72/ sheet

Richard, that's pretty close to the price that I pay at teh local mom & pop lumber yard for oak ply. It's cheaper at the boxes, but the local place is better quality. Plus, they deliver for about a buck a sheet on stuff like that, even helping to carry it into the garage. So, if they stuff you got is of similar quality, then I'd say that you did well.

That sounds like A4 -- Good One Side (G1S). Is that Correct?

$132.80 at Century -- so about the same there.
