There doesn't seem to be any consistency between all the school districts around here. It was -7 this morning with a windchill of about -20 and I don't think any of the schools closed.

A little off topic but they close school for fog days where I grew up. We'd have fog with less then 20 feet visibility. Tule fog is a killer, literally.
sorry no days in the single digits, let alone below zero.

We moved to Pittsburgh from Minneapolis.

Today my son and my wife stood outside waiting for the bus for 30 minutes (usually they only wait 2-5 minutes).

Finally, another bus drove by and stopped and opened up the window and said "you do know there is a 2 hour delay today, right?".

It was clear and sunny, about 7 degrees... and school was delayed due to the "cold".

        Crazy.

I'm not sure what we do around here to close on cold days. The only time I remember closing school was because the boiler couldn't keep up, happened once that I remember. When I was in school I remember the Mondays were darn cold in the school, by Friday you could were shorts and T-shirts and be comfortable.

I remember when our new Superintendent from upper Michigan came here (mid Ohio). The first BIG snow storm we had school, only school in 50 miles. Seemed he was use to Upper Michigan and their snow, he forgot to account for this area not having the equipment to remove the snow.

When I went to college in Cincy. IF the weather man even mentioned there MIGHT be snow tomorrow, the schools would cancel that night.

          Everything is relative.

Growing up, the only time my school ever got closed was for:

            1. Earthquakes 2. Riots.

            Go figure...

Did I mention that today was 75 degrees, sunny with a light breeze?

we had a snow day today beause of temperature.

Although it may be because the high school is an outdoor campus in Cleveland..... Kinda glad they are remolding it for once. its basically a great migration of students every 40 minutes. Police shut down the road and everything.

Nope. No cold days in WI. So far no snow days, despite record snowfall.

In the twelve years I attended, they closed school exactly once. That was the St. Patrick's Day storm in '65. I remember several times standing outside waiting for the bus in -30 temps. (Sorry, no walking barefoot, uphill, both ways stories from me.)

Pretty much the same thing around here, in the center of WA. Although I don't think we have had the record snow fall this year.

Around here the school has had no delays or closures due to snow or cold temps. Actually I don't ever remember there being a day around here that the school has ever closed, even when I was in school. I know that there were some 2 hour delays but nothing serious. The only thing around here that will delay school is if the roads are very icy. But when it snows I know the plows run during the night and clear bus routes.

In a Milwaukee suburb, we've had three snow days. No cold days. The last snow day brought 18" of snow (all in a single system).

Years ago, in the early 1970s, when we lived in Fairbanks and our kids were of school age, the policy was that school was optional when it got to -50 F.

I don't recall any 'cold days' since we moved to Anchorage although there are several 'snow days' every year. On real heavy snow years, they have to take measures to replace the lost time -- typically cancelling "In-Service days" and having regular classes.

                        Stay warm. Regards, Steve

We had a snow day in area schools yesterday due to an ice storm. It was our second ice storm this year, but the first one cancil schools for a week, mainly because power was off that long. Snow and ice are usually the only reasons here. When I was in high school, we usually had school anyway.
