    I am headed to Pittsburgh.....

.....for a few days next week. I will be downtown without a car and not a whole lot of free time. But I was wondering if there are any suggestions for woodworking outlets or interests around the area? I see a Rockler just north of the city that I could go visit. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks, Kevin.

What hotel will you be staying at? I have been in Pittsburgh for 2 weeks now for work, and I will be here through next Thursday. I haven't found any woodworking shops, but there is a new Harbor Freight tools opening in Monroeville (about 20 minutes outside the city), they won't be open till week after next though.

Maybe some of the PIttsburgh locals have some used equipment they want to get rid off.

Without a car, how do you plan on transporting WW purchases?

If you're going to be downtown with no car, in all honesty, there isn't much (anything?) woodworking-related to see. If you head 20 mins. or so north, there is a Rockler off of McKnight road, near Ross Park Mall. If you head 20 mins. or so northwest (toward the airport), there is a Woodcraft, near Robinson Town Center Mall. There is also a Harbor Freight nearby.

      Good luck!

I moved from Pittsburgh (Monroeville) in 1999 so my information is a bit dated. There used to be a woodworking store north or northwest of downtown that sells woodworking tools and wood. They have a mixture of domestic and imported hardwood including ebony and other somewhat exotic wood. They also have a pretty complete list of tools on display and books and other supplies. I would look in the phone book, make some calls, and try to get there if it is still there. It is an interesting place to spend an hour or two and they probably have something you just have to have.

I think I know the place he's referring to, but I can't remember the name of it. I stumbled upon it about 2 years ago, unfortunately about 2 weeks after they went out of business.

            Thanks for the tips.

I found the locations of the Rockler and Woodcraft stores. If I can find the time to go, then it might just give me an excuse to rent a car. There is always room in my suitcase for some tools. And who knows http://www.bt3central.com/images/icons/icon12.gif, if I find a great deal on a dust collector then maybe I will just have to roadtrip back home.
