More on LOML's Honda Problem

Had the Accord towed to the dealer this A.M.

Mentioned the extended transmission warranty to 100,000 miles. Turns out it's been extended again last June or so to 107,000! So Honda really does recognize this is a product defect.

No arguments. After the mechanic said yep, tranny dead, a new one was ordered to be installed for free. Should get the car back later this week.

So, if any of you have a Honda Accord 1998-2002 (or an Odyssey - same problem) and have any problems, get it in immediately.

We have 2 Hondas and absolutely love them. You don't hear of too many issues with Hondas, and it's good to hear they make it right when there is a problem.I'm glad it worked out for you. If you're like me, when you start thinking about transmission problems, you just feel your wallet getting lighter.

God, replacing all those transmissions has gotta hurt. Even if they're rebuilding the swapped ones. That isn't inexpensive.

This transmission problem is estimated to effect 1-2% of Accords and Odysseys built between 1998 - 2002, and there are scattered reports of problems in later years too. Not a large percentage but it's still a lot of cars!

Some internet reports of trannys failing in the first 20,000 miles, others lasting like LOML's did, to 81,000.

Problem is - some have had their tranny replaced 3 times!

When we had our '01 Odyssey I would do a drain & fill of the tranny fluid every 30K, hoping it would help avoid problems. Our son has had the Ody for about 2 years now with no problems and aprox 91K on it.

I see your's is a 2000 model, so this doesn't affect you, but Honda extented the warranty on all their 2002-2006 models for mileage by 5%, so 3yr/36k became 3yr/37800, 7yr/100k became 7yr/105K, and the 1yr/12k parts warranty was extented to 1yr/12600. This was the result of settlement of a class action suit concerning odometer error.

sigh...sure miss the Ody.

Not the Odessy problem


My brother had a 2000, transmission replaced three times WAY before 100,000 miles and he traded it in (and they didn't want to take it).
I had a friend who brought one down to the shop with the light, and found out what year and the code, and I told him to drive it DIRECTLY to the dealer and nowhere else. It was his daughters and it quickly got dropped.

After 2000 there was supposed to be a redesign, because the internal sensor that was going bad, was buried by the transmission and required a rebuild to access it.

Everybody I know that had one, has waited a while before getting another Oddessy.
