    Caster issue/ opinions, please

I'm looking at these casters and I'm wondering how many of you have used the four holed mounting plate as opposed to the threaded stem mount. It would seem to me that the sem mounts have the potential to widen the hole but then again, why would that happen if the hole was the right size and the nut tightened against a washer to spread the load? Right? I had a bad exerience with some of Dad's cabs on wheels and the stem type casters doing just what I stated but I can't tell if the holes were the wrong size from the start or if the holes became oversized over time. I also can't see an issue with the plate mounted types. Are there any? These look like a no-lose choice to me but I could be wrong (no kidding - LOL).
    TIA!

Chiz, your link is busted (the "http://" part is in there twice).

My experience is only with the kind that have a plate. I would use them when you're screwing them to a wooden cabinet. I'd only use the spindle kind when attaching to steel legs, for exactly the reason you mention.

I buy my casters from Hartville Tool. They look essentially identical to those Woodcraft sells, for about half the (regular) price.

I have used 4-hole plate casters from Hartville and Grizzly. I prefer the Hartville casters.

Thanks, Larry - fixed it. Besides pricing, why do you like the Hartville casters, Pak?

I'm going to go with Larry, use plate mounts in wood. Here's the caster section at Grizzly http://www.grizzly.com/products/sear....aspx?q=caster .
I've used their casters on several projects, always with good luck.

Well, I too use the 4 hole plate mount casters from Hartville. I guess I found the Hartville casters first and have been happy with them. They look an awful lot like the woodcraft casters but are much cheaper. I have almost all my tools and workbench mounted on the Hartville casters because my shop is so small and I need to be able to move tools in and out. The only thing I might bring up is that if your floor is smooth, the 3" will work fine but if it's rough the 4" will roll better. I also use 4 swivel locking casters on my tools instead of 2 swivel and 2 fixed because you can guide them much better and the couple of bucks more in cost will seem cheap after you've used them a while.

As far as plates vs. spindles, you can't go wrong with plates. It's 4 mounting points, rather than one. I have some Hartvilles and some Woodcrafts, and cannot see any difference in their performance, so I can't justify paying more for WC.

Except for spcific applications like chairs or other furniture replacements, I use plate mounts. Lighter applications get the Grizzly casters. I buy my heavy duty casters from Darnell-Rose, and American company that gives you several options on plate size, wheel/bearing type, and other design features.
