Anyone know about Honda Accords - problem

LOML has a 2000 Accord with approx. 65,000 miles. All required service done (she is religious about that - even reminds me when my car is due!)

Last week it started over-revving and shifting hard (auto transmission). I checked trans. fluid - down 1/2 of the stick so I topped it with Honda trans. fluid, being careful to not overfill. Seemed OK then started again same symptoms yesterday. rechecked fluid - OK.

This evening she gets home from work - car acting worse, "Check" idiot light on, AND the "D" on the shift lever is blinking (say what? never saw that before on any car!)

Obviously it goes to the dealer on Monday, but any ideas what would cause this? And do we risk driving it to the dealer 9about 12 miles) or have it towed?

Sometimes I long for the old days - no computer chips, easy diagnosis!

A Google search says that on older Accords it is a problem with the Transmission Control Unit. Makes sense to me especially with the overreving but I'd check the owners manual. Wi

Hey Doc,

Just for the h*ll of it, check the color of the trans fluid, it should be a cherry red color, not brown or dark red, as in dried blood. Also, smell it, if it smells burnt (you'll know), it means that you probably have glazed the clutches (yes, auto trans. do have clutches). This usually occurs from too little or too much (cavation) transmission fluid.

Also, always check the level with the car running and the fluid warm. Try (with parking brake on) to check the level with the trans in each gear. You dont have to rev the engine, just the RPMs at idle are sufficient. I always try to stand on the side of the car while doing this, don't trust parking brakes.

BTW, I have a 2007 Accord with auto, never have any problems, but its too soon for anything to brake.

Bruce - yep, trans fluid was cherry red and no burnt smell, and checked it with engine at operating temp in all gears.

Seem to be a common problem with 1998-2002 Accords. Honda extended the warranty because of it.

I don't think the problem is your transmission. I think it is your programmable fuel injection module. If you look under the hood, do you have a "PGM FI" module?

Edit: Looks like there are transmission issues with these, so I amend my advice to having the dealer check it. Especially the blinking "D".
